Bring back Chase Daniel?

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; My only concerns is that Brees holds all the cards. He can demand 25ml a year or walk. He is at an age were you dont want to be giving out 3/4 year deals to work the cap. I do ...

I do think a plan B needs to be in place soon. Get some leverage back and an option there in case father time catches up (and he does overnight),cap reasons or if we are a year or two away and he wont/cant wait

May not be an option for long, Daniel is visiting the Jets today:

I honestly believe him when he says he feels he can continue to play at a high level well into his forties. I would be shocked if he wanted to retire for at least the next three years. He wants another shot at the Super Bowls with the Saints. That is clear. At his point of his career he doesn't need to hold the Saints captive. With the cap climbing at an annual rate of 9-10% a figure of $25 million will be a bargain for a quality QB.

As for plan B, of course. There should always be a plan B. You should always be grooming a QB even if you don't end up keeping them.

And how is that different than any other day in the last 11 years?

How is this a problem? Not creating cap nightmares seems to be aligned between Brees and the team. Last year Brees could have asked for 3 years, $75 million, all guaranteed and likely would have got it. Then he could have played two years, retired, and left the team holding the bag for the remainder. Instead they worked out something reasonable for two years where either side can walk away with no damage.

I just really do not understand why after always choosing a reasonable workable contract route in each of the opportunities that have come up, that anyone would think that Brees either wants to leave, or to screw the team.

BTW $25 million is quickly becoming average QB money in today's cap environment, which is approaching $160 million.

So two year contracts with automatic voids after a year is perfect for both sides.

A plan B always needs to be in place. But as I've said before with Brees, it's probably better to plan for a year too late as opposed to a year too early. It is likely that it'll be impossible to find anyone who will be as productive as Brees even at 39,40, or 41 years old. The only X-factor is injury, which no one can predict.

In any case, Brees leaving, whenever that happens, will be the end of an era in Saints history. The aftermath will be rebuilding whether or not it's with a rookie or a veteran bridge QB.

The man is literally irreplaceable. So it's a fool's errand losing sleep trying to do so.

Chase or Luke?

To me, the obvious solution is a winner take all cage match.

Well, on second thought, Roger's probably got some sissified rule against death matches.

Another idea would be to let them battle it out in camp and pre-season. Let them both play behind the 1st string line and who ever plays better gets the job.

Re: Bring back Chase Daniel?

Well it happened. Sounds like Chase got a one-year deal. Probably good for both parties - Chase isn't locked into a long-term deal as a backup; Saints have a solid plan B if Brees gets hurt. Also if the 2017 season is a disaster (0-6 wins) and Payton and Brees go and this thing gets blown up, the new regime would have a serviceable QB already in town and could resign him.

Re: Bring back Chase Daniel?

I really do not understand this signing. So Luke and Chase battle it out and the loser gets cut the last week with little chance of latching on elsewhere.

For all the hype that Daniel should be a starter somewhere, teams are looking at Glennon and Hoyer as much more expensive options, and Barkley, Keenum, and even Sanchez got more money and were signed before him.

Bottom line, we signed a 30 year old with exactly ONE career touchdown pass

That is a fair point. I guess the plus side is that we would actually have real competition for the backup QB position, not just a shoo-in. Maybe signing Daniel is more of an admission that it is strike three on Grayson.
