What should a trade for Malcolm Butler look like to you?

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; We could always offer the 32nd pick we received from New England, a 4th rounder from this years draft, and a 2nd rounder from next years draft for Patrick Peterson....

We could offer them a 3rd rounder and be done with it. We can draft someone with #11 or 32 or 2nd or 3rd who could play just as well as Butler. He won't resign with the Patriots for sure so he'll have to get off that 13-14 million a year or sign elsewhere.

If Payton and D.A. feel they gotta have Butler, this would be the trade I do...

Saints send pick No. 103 (R3, 103 (from NE)) and pick 196 (R6, 12) to the Patriots...

Patriots send CB Malcolm Butler and pick No. 118 (R4, 11 (from NO via NE)) to the Saints...

They have back-loaded Hightowers deal so may be looking to extend Butler.

Wouldn't be too bothered just keping the picks and also would not be surprised if the Pats led Loomis up th garden path by talking a future trade with Butler to get the deal done and always planned to extend once Butler had an idea what he would get on the open market after meeting the Saints
Rumors are nothing but speculation from media hacks with no more knowledge than we have. They are stating what they think could be happening.

He isn't ON a 13-14 million figure. That was just speculation from media hacks. Geeze! Do some research or simply read the post where I showed exactly where those number originated.

We don't agree on many things, but I'm with you on this. The Patriots just signed Dont'a Hightower to a 4 year/$43.5 million deal. That's roughly $11 million a year range. I know it's different positions, but I believe we could get Butler on a similar deal. I'd say 3 years/$32.5 million with over half of it guaranteed. That's like $10.5 million a year, which is reasonable for somebody with his body of work.

On the other hand, Stephone Gilmore got 5 years/$65 million which is over $13 million a year. I don't know who would command the bigger price if they were on the open market together. Logan Ryan got a 3 year/$30 million deal as I'm doing the research and typing this. A.J. Bouye receiver $13.5 million a year. I'm going to speculate he's not going any lower than $10 million a year, but also not any higher than $13 million.

You can't just get hung up on how much a player contract is per year; there's also:
  • Contract Length of Time (Malcolm Butler is already 27 yo)
  • Guaranteed Money (That's how much will be dead should it not work out)
  • Percentage Allocated vs Team Cap Space (We've got some contracts coming due next season)

Butler and camp has stated he wanted to be payed as a Top 10 CB; which he's definitely earned and proved he deserves.

New England just had reservations about committing that much to their Superbowl hero.

Re: What should a trade for Malcolm Butler look like to you?

Obviously the Saints, specifically Sean Payton, Dennis Allen are not happy with their current crop of CBs and feel Butler improves the team.

Which leads me to these questions that Raymond and Mary Holder will probably not ask:

  • Are there lingering health issues with cornerbacks currently under contract?

  • Was there a performance evaluation that returned a conclusion that the position needed to be upgraded, current rostered players had reached a ceiling?

  • Is there a periphery issue(s) with a player(s) that required a CB be brought in to replace a current player?

  • Are the available cornerbacks in this heralded, historic draft class not as appreciated, positively graded by the Saints scouting efforts?

  • Would it be fair to characterize the current Saints regime/Payton Tenure as one that avoids rookie players?

It's not that my way is the right way, I just make the right way my way...
