Had much the same response with Colin Montgomery the golfer, my wife and I were in St Andrews Scotland watching the Dunhill Match Play Champonship in 1990. We followed Fred Couples and Colin for the entire match, it went to the 17th hole known as the "Road Hole" where Colin closed the match out 2 & 1.

About an hour later we went in to a small pub to have lunch and Colin was sitting there by himself. He finished is meal, was sitting there waiting on his change and was only 2 tables from us.

Walked over and congradulated him on his victory ... never said a word, never made eye contact just got up and walked the other way ... to use your phrase "Asshat".
