We won't get any relief. We'll be paying him his guaranteed $14 million regardless.

Re: Nick Fairley Placed on NFI

My guess is they have placed him here so not to get hit with the cap in one shot this year. Sadly i doubt we see him again. Pure speculation but it will be hard to declare him fit imho.

Wish him all the best. The man has alot of life in front of him amd thats more important than football

Re: Nick Fairley Placed on NFI

I hope his life is good and long and that he is able to get this resolved fully.

Dizzle, guess there was something to that Tony McDaniel signing after all and it wasn't negative as much as honest. Nice job!

I hope that this designation doesn't mean we pay him this season?

Re: Nick Fairley Placed on NFI

Ouch, and the hits keep on rolling with this front office:

Despite the condition being a non-football injury, the Saints will still have to pay Fairley the other half of the $8 million on his contract, per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

Re: Nick Fairley Placed on NFI

While I would rather have seen him available, once again we have both time and depth to fall back upon. Even without Fairley I expect the defensive line will be better than what was fielded last season. Rankins will be there the full season and will be another year more seasoned. We've added a veteran in McDaniel and have three young guys coming on strong, Onyemata, Davison and Zimmer.

Add in the clear improvements with the LB and DB corps and we shouldn't really miss a beat.

Re: Nick Fairley Placed on NFI

Can we point the finger at someone here? Seems to me this is a big mistake someone in our front office needs to be accountable for. How on earth do you sign someone who already has an enlarged heart, to a long-term deal? Hell, how is he NOT getting physicals more often than anyone based on his pre existing condition alone???

I wish nothing but the best for Fairly, my frustration isn't pointed at him at all. But how does this even happen???!!!

He's had the condition his whole career. It was known by all parties. He was checked out prior to his signing and things were obviously no different than previously. Something must have changed in those few months since he signed and the exams at OTA's.

I guess you can point your finger at God because only he could have predicted the change in Fairley's condition.

My thing is there are people on here pointing to the fact that we are better without him, so if that is the case then there was literally no reason to sign him to the large contract

Yeah man his health is what matters, no doubt about that, but yeah another kick in the teeth

And exactly how could that have been foreseen by the front office? Every new contract is accompanied by a physical, especially if there was already a condition which was a known factor by all parties? And I don't see this standing in the way of our second Lombardi. One small piece. The drop off from Fairley to the next man up isn't that great in the scheme of things.

definitely, front office holds some responsibility.

And if people want to claim we are better without him then there was no reason to sign him in the first place. Either way it comes back to the front office.

Nobody has said we are better without him. But we can absorb the loss much easier with the vast improvements with LB's and DB's.

As I pointed out earlier, only the good Lord could have known that something new would arise after many years of the known existence of the condition.

It's unfortunate. I'm not upset about the cap hit and all that. The man earned a bigger contract and got one. Just ****ty luck that this happened. And he was going to be a big part of the defensive line this season. I was excited. Now...I'm just pissed.

He was going to be a part. How big in relation to the rest of the rotation, we'll never know now. I'm still excited. Not pissed at all. **** happens. Good teams just move on and I see this as the best team we have had since 2009.

I wonder if the Saints/NFL have the ability to arbitrate since Nick wasn't able to play a down? I would think the Saints FO and attorney's were smart enough to have some type of opt clause in his latest contract.

Anyway you slice it, this sucks :argue:.

I don't see us being better without him or worse.... he was playing on a prove t deal so of course we got him giving his all... who's to say he would have continued to play at that level after getting paid... I don't think this hurts us yeah it would have been nice to have him but the linebacker position is 100 times better that will help this D more thank people think ...

There's quite a bit of conflicting info on whether or not we're on the hook for his contract.

From what I've read it appears we're only on the hook for his signing bonus (spread out over 5 years) and his salary this year.

S*** happens, this may be unfortunate but no way should the front office be hammered like they're being hammered by people who don't know jack s*** about NFL contracts.

He had 6.5 sacks and the year before with the Rams on same type of contract he only had .5. I don't know what this does to our line one way or the other but why the big contract for a player who does nothing for us?

Be well Nick. Thanks for an exciting year. You deserved the new contract and we were thrilled to have you back.

Line depth is not as big an issue as some make it out to be.

Just further evidence that the front office and Sean need to go. How many times are they gonna make same mistake.

Here we go with all the excuses to sheild them both from blame from the blind people who dont or WON'T see it. Ready 3 2 1.

By doing it this way, the cap hit for what will be his retirement will be spread out over a couple of years...

Somebody needs to explain why this known ailment wasn't explored more thoroughly before signing him...

Local Sports Show Host Eric Asher has really been pressing the question if it's not time to move on from Ochsner Sports Health...

NEVER pay journeymen more than a year. If you get a good year consider yourself lucky and move on. I wish the guy the best but this is killing us. We keep getting burned by the same scenario year after year. It's beyond stupid.
Especially on the defensive side. They almost NEVER work out.

Lmao! Dude back away from the cliff. Look I'm pissed about this too, but I don't think this justifies firing Sean Payton. I'm confident they didn't sign Fairley and think this was going to be an issue. Lol. Why don't you wait until after this season to determine if Payton needs the ax.

NF was our second best pass rusher, possibly top 15 in the NFL with interior pressure & had 3 good years as a DT just hitting his prime.

He was far from a "journeyman".

I voted to let him walk as a FA. Not that I dislike him but would liked to have a better player able to be more effective while at nose. I hope he has a good life outside of football.

injury settlement time

Based on camp injury and the worries as players injuries started to rear it's ugly head

2018 nfl draft
R1 - Vita Vea DT Washington 6041 332 5.19 #50 rJr
R3 - Frank Ragnow C/OG,Arkansas 6052 319 5.14 #72 Sr

Top FA signing - not sold we have the starter yet
Stephon Tuitt DE Steelers

Now you have a solid DE rotation.
