Back on subject ...
The media is using the decimated defense of last season as the baseline to judge the impact of Fairley's loss to the overall success of the defense. They fail to take into consideration any of the upgrades throughout all three levels AND the impact of new, improved coaching at all three of those levels. Nolan with the LB's, Nielson with the defensive line and Aaron Glenn in his second season, but hopefully the first with all of the starters intact. |

I see the improvements this off-season to be far and away more dramatic to the potential of the defense. Just starting with the draft ... Lattimore, Marcus Williams, Henrickson, Anzalone, all of whom could end up as starters sooner than later and Muhammad, while raw, has huge potential. Add to that Te'o and Klein coming in as free agents. Veteran Tony McDaniel at DT and Alex Okafor at DE are better additions through free agency than anything we have picked up defensively over the previous two off-seasons. And Rafael Bush at safety adds excellent depth. And that isn't including the top two defensive pickups this off-season, LB coach Mike Nolan and D-Line coach Ryan Nielsen.
