We beat the Falcons once and win the division right?

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; We swept Carolina who already has a win over the Falcons so the best they can do is split with them. I guess if we lose to Bucs, Falcons beat Carolina then maybe it would put them in front place?...

This week we put a nice stranglehold on the division. Thank you Vikings! We look great. Seattle proved Philly is mortal. Looking at the NFC if you see the world through Black and Gold goggles like I do you gotta love our chances.

That all depends if you get a piece of arse before the game.

Philly looked awful tonight. I wasn't impressed by their QB in the least bit. Their o-line was totally exploited by a depleted Seahawks defense.

It's not that cut and dried. First here are the first 4 tiebreakers for 2 teams in the same division from https://operations.nfl.com/the-rules...ng-procedures/:

1. Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games between the clubs)
2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the division
3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games
4. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference
Applying these to the Kitties and the Chokers at this minute:

Kitties: loses #1 to saints. So their only option is to finish a game ahead of the Saints. Any three Saints wins down the stretch eliminates them from contention. A 2-2 split on the Saints part would require a 4 game run from the Kitties or 3-1 and both Saints losses to be division losses for them to have a chance.

Chokers: Plunking one on the Chokers Thursday puts them out the running. The head to head is gone because a Saints win eliminates any possible sweep for the Chokers and they are 3 games back with 3 to play.

Now on to the three way tie:
Three or More Clubs

(Note: If two clubs remain tied after a third club or other clubs are eliminated during any step, the tiebreaker reverts to step 1 of the two-club format.)

1. Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games among the clubs)
2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the division
3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games
4. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference
5. Strength of victory
6. Strength of schedule
There are only two realistic three way ties: 11-5 and 10-6. 11-5 can only happen if the Chokers win out (and pigs fly). That gives the Chokers 4 division wins down the stretch, two division losses to the Saints along with a win (Bucs), with sweeps by the Saints over the Panthers, along with the Chokers having sweeping the Saints and the Bucs, leaving them at 5-1 in the division and 3-1 (0.750) record among the clubs, 2-2 for the Saints, and 1-3 for the Kitties. This is the worst case scenario. At 10-6 it remains the same if the sole loss is to the Bucs. But if either the Saints or the Kitties win plunk that single loss then the head to head drops the Chokers to 2-2 for #1 coupled with either 3-1 or 2-2 for the Saints with the Kitties either 2-2 (kitties win against Chokers) or 1-3 (kitties lose to Chokers). If all three end up 2-2 then it goes to common games. Chokers would be 8-6, Kitties 10-4, And Saints also 10-4. Chokers are dropped out and back to 2 teams head to head, which the Saints win over the Kitties. Also 9-7 is possible but unlikely with the Saints stuck, the Chokers going 2-2 with the 2 wins over the Saints, and the Kitties 1-3 with the sole win against the Chokers. Kitties end up 2-2 in the round robin, Saints 2-2, and the Chokers 3-1.

Note that for most of these scenarios to be viable it requires the Bucs to beat one or more of the other division contenders. They are currently 0-3 and not looking too good.

Bottom line is that it's still a mess. A win Thursday cleans up most everything leaving the Saints with 10 wins with the Chokers 3 games behind and 2 games behind in the division standings with 3 to go. The easiest way to clean it up is to win the next 3 games. That secures the NFC South without question leaving the Saints 5-0 in the division and sweeps over both the Kitties and the Chokers. Then life would be as good as my signature.

Super Bowl Championships: New Orleans Saints:1, Carolina:0, Atlanta Chokers: STILL ZERO

Only Atlanta choked in an unchokable situation... Life is definitely good.

Just take care of business and don't worry about all the different scenarios. Deja Vu someone said that before!

Re: We beat the Falcons once and win the division right?

We win Thursday and it makes it hard for the Falcons to make the playoffs and would make it really difficult for us to lose the division. We would have 3 games to go and would have to lose 2 of those 3 and the panties would have to win all of their remaining games. So a win this week gets as close to a sure thing as possible. We need lattimore back and as healthy an oline as possible. We will get the falcons best game possible. Lose and their all but done

A win doesn't give us the division, but gives us a huge 3 game lead in the wildcard.
This week is also the panthers' turn to get their asses kicked by the Vikings, and they have the Falcons last day of the season

Just because you win all your division games doesn't mean you win the division. You still have to have a better overall record than any other team in your division. Division wins are used as the tie breaker. Now if we did go 6-0 in the division we would be division champs because no one could have a better record this year.
