no statistics but i would say yes for 1st rounders. as you get down to later rounds i would expect the bonuses, guarantees, and lengths to be less proportionately.

so, in that 3-4 yr range, if you don\'t have someone come in immediately and contribute would you say we\'re investing?

it depends on how much of it is guaranteed. the more you are commited to, the more the investment. thus when they go sour, the pain is all the worse, ala sullivan.

since its an average, it counts in late rounders as well....in the first few round i would say you are looking at an average that is a bit higher, so in the first few rounds you are looking for players who could immediately contribute and be a player for several years or you are investing time into players as far as development goes...however, in the later rounds, you are sometimes drafting guys that will show you something in the terms of their original contract and then try to sign them to something longer(i.e. Talman Gardner)

i looked up a couple from last year-
#3 larry fitzgerald 6 yrs/60mil, 20mil guaranteed, signing bonus unknown

#4 philip rivers 6 yrs/50mil, 14.25 mil signing bonus

#6 kellen winslow 6 yrs/29mil base to 40mil w/incentives, 16.5 mil signing bonus
I found it Kelley .Seems like deals are getting longer for first round picks. I like that.

ok, so you\'re posting guaranteed deals, unless there are clauses in the contract, correct?
