2005: The Hopeful Realist

Billy, you say it\'s the same old argument... that\'s not MY fault. It\'s the Saints\' fault for NOT ADDRESSING NEEDS. What are the problems? LB? DT? Defense? Coaching? I can\'t fix that. What big need did we address this offseason? Man, if it were up to me, the Saints WOULD have signed a starting LB already. They would have signed a DT. But I don\'t make the decisions. Just do the math Billy. The Saints want to SIMPLIFY the offense and go to BALL CONTROL. That USUALLY translates into less points in the NFL right? They\'ve signed ONE player on defense who will start. On the 32nd RANKED DEFENSE. That\'s not MY fault - but to suggest it is a strategy for success is just plain stupid. Last year and the year before and the year before may not be relevenant to you, but they are to me. They prove that no run defense means no playoffs. Ignore that if you want. Let hope and the \'anything can happen in the NFL\' cliche keep you warm and fuzzy at night - but don\'t for one second suggest that you know what\'s best for this board or team b/c your history has proven otherwise. Maybe that\'s why you want everyone to forget the past... |

For the most part its been much worse than mediocre. But its typical Saint pessimism to bring up the 38 year history of failure when discussing the current situation. Yeah, we\'ve sucked for 40 years, how\'s next year gonna be different? :casstet: |

That is the question now isn\'t it Danno? How is next year going to be different. None of us \"hopeful realists\" are suggesting that 2005 CANNOT be different or that we DO NOT WANT it to be very different than the last 4 years or 40 years. I would like a reason to believe that this team might finally get it together. But there is simply no evidence of that. Now - this is where the key difference comes into play. Billy will no doubt respond that there is also no evidence that they cannot all get better. I\'m not arguing that point. But then that argument misses the point. There\'s good evidence that the sun won\'t explode tomorrow. The last 4 or 5 Billion years for starters. Current conditions for another. Those are factors that make me pretty confident that the sun probably won\'t explode tomorrow. But then there\'s nothing to suggest that it isn\'t possible. It boils back down to the two main points that I keep coming back to. For me, I can hope that the Saints will get better until I puke, but it won\'t make one lick of difference. Thus, I take every effort not to let my hope interfere with my evaluation of the team. Also - I don\'t ignore PROBABILITY for POSSIBILITY. Billy, does the opposite. He hopes the Saints will get better, and then uses any possible scenario, no matter how improbable, to justif that belief. Then he peddles it on here and when he\'s met with skepticism he suggests that predicting mediocrity is pessimistic. Yeah, that\'s a much better plan. |
