AP reports the Kansas City Chiefs were supposed to look to the draft for help at cornerback -- and they still might. They just don't have to do it in the first round. That's because the club is on the verge of making a trade with Miami that would send cornerback Patrick Surtain to the Chiefs for a second-round pick, the 46th overall, in Saturday's draft, NFL sources said early Friday. The deal, which could be announced Friday, is contingent upon Surtain passing a team physical. According to sources, this week the Chiefs reached a contractual settlement with Surtain on an extension -- clearing the way for the completion of negotiations with Miami. Surtain was entering the last year of his contract with the Dolphins and was given permission to seek a trade, with the Chiefs the most interested club. Terms of the trade were not complete, but league sources indicated the Chiefs surrendered the second-round choice they insisted they would not trade during talks the past month. Instead, they tried offering a fourth-rounder and combination of picks, but Miami was not interested. Until now. Making the deal not only clears over $6 million in cap space for the Dolphins, but it puts them into the second round of Saturday's NFL Draft. The Dolphins sacrificed their second-round choice to Philadelphia a year ago when they traded for quarterback A.J. Feeley. The Chiefs completed trade talks two days after it appeared they were slowing down. It is unclear what produced movement, but one NFL source said the Raiders' trade of cornerback Phillip Buchanon to Houston had an impact. The Texans surrendered second and third-round draft choices for the disgruntled Buchanon, who is younger but not as highly regarded as Surtain. Surtain fills an immediate need in Kansas City, where the Chiefs were last in pass defense and 31st overall. Surtain, 28, was named to the Pro Bowl twice and missed only four games in a seven-year career. He also joins former Miami teammate Sammy Knight in Kansas City. Knight, a safety, was acquired as a free-agent.

i hate the vikes but hafta say once more how impressed i am by their offseason makeover. THAT kinda front office aggressiveness after a team has been pretty much the same for 4 years is something that will excite fans and promote realistic optimism. even if their moves don\'t turn out ya gotta give\'m props for not standing pat again with a tweak here or there.

High school football coach always said....if you\'re gonna mess up, mess up big. No one\'s gonna dog you out for that. At least you tried. Like the Saints with Sully. Yeah I\'m still mad at them, but only because they picked Sully, not because they had the balls to trade up. They\'d have picked Suggs, and we wouldn\'t be having this convo.
I admire Minnesota too. Minny\'s my surprise pick to make it to the NFC championship. Nate Burleson is my pick for breakout player of the year. |

Gotta agree GT and Kelley. Especially GT. I am not mad at all at the Saints for trading up in 2003, hell I expected it. I am mad at the pick they made. But for a few moments, I was excited at the prospect of a Kevin Williams or a Suggs or a Trufant. Short lived as it was. But if that forces them to back into a corner and cower, afraid to make more aggressive moves, then that one pick did more damage than initially thought. Minny is doing what they have needed to do for years to compete, put more balance to their team. They have been uber aggressive this offseason, something I wish we could say.

...and if it would have been trufant or williams that ended up being a bust i could have hacked that. they were expected to go that high and perform as such. the f.o. chose to stretch for sully, a guy that would have likely been available at one of the picks they traded away.
this year if they choose jammal brown and he is a bust, so be it. similar to the sully move would be if they choose to take marcus johnson, og, ole miss at #16. he might would be gone, but just as likely could be there at #40, hell, possibly #82. if the sunshiners think they have seen pessimism now, let them make that move... and it is possible they will. |

Gotta agree with you again Kelley. What makes it worse is Trufant and Willaims AREN\'T busts, and have lived up to their picks, Williams even sooner than prob expected. He was in the pro bowl in his second year, getting double digit sacks as a DT. Egads. We coulda had that?????
And I don\'t think even the optimists will be able to run should we pull off another Sully-style gaffe with this draft. Hopeful realist, whatever, there\'s gonna be some harsh words on the board if we blow it like that again. |

For all of you guys who love what the Vikings and Chiefs have done ...
What do you predict their records to be this year? 12-4? 13-3? What? Or 8-8? Please tell us?!! No beating around the bush either. |

Barring key injuries(such as Priest with the Chiefs last year or a Culpepper going down), better than 8-8.

Better that 8-8? Is that the best prediction you can make? I see for all the great players that the Chiefs and Vikings have signed that you still can\'t muster-up enough courage to make a real prediction?! Try again?! |
