this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; Thanks LK. I was reading this and I thought that I was going to have to go through the \"we can\'t keep Howard\" thing again. Maybe among the four or so of us who think this we\'ll say it enough ...

Thanks LK.
I was reading this and I thought that I was going to have to go through the \"we can\'t keep Howard\" thing again. Maybe among the four or so of us who think this we\'ll say it enough times? I know that you\'re having trouble with our draft. I think Bullocks is going to play Right or Left Safety, not Strong or Free. That makes a difference. I also posted an article on draft strategies that made me start to rethink our draft. I\'m going to dig it up and bump it for you - let me know what you think afterward. Cheers. |

Yall can say what you want to (as it makes no difference to me)
But, JKool and saintwhodi have argued several times that keeping Howard was going to prevent us from signing draft picks and extending exsisting contracts. All of that was said without providing sufficient information, IMHO. I saw the Falcons sign Ed Hartwell when they were only 1-million under the cap. How did they do that? I see teams constantly signing big name free-agents when it appears there\'s no way they can do it. It\'s quite apparant to me that if a team isn\'t in horrible cap shape then it\'s very workable to keep a player for ONE year. [Edited on 25/4/2005 by GumboBC] |

Another point which I , myself think holds a ton of relevance is..
If the Saints come out of the gate weak..and loose 4 out of the first 6 or something like that..I really think Howard will be gone from here...It would make no sense to pay him so much anymore..and the team would be entering yet another rebuilding stage..although it will be after the season is over...the money will have to come from somewhere... However..if the Saints can manage at the very least..3 wins out of the first 6..it is kinda up in the air...many teams will want Howard, due to injury to thier roster..and some will just want a boost to get them stronger up front...and IF we come out poor/average..it wouldn\'t suprise me to see Howard get traded in the early weeks... Finally..IF we come out of the gate running..and just wipe the floor with the blood of our enemies..Howard will stay..for at least this entire season...If it ain\'t broke..don\'t fix it... Regardless of how it goes..I\'m almost positive that Howard\'s time is coming to an end in New Orleans..He has been a pretty good DE...and I will be sad to see him go..but..Money talks..and this is a buisness foremost.. |

Dman shadow where you been? Missed ya bro. Good to have you back. Nice points, but I think Howard will be gone before the season starts if we can get a decent player in return. Anywho, welcome back bud.

Ok during the draft the cowboys where stated as going in the 3-4. Parcells was quoted as saying pass rushers our easier to find in a 3-4. It was also stated that the Cowboys never used a 3-4 defense in the history of the franchise. I don\'t think he stated why he thinks pass rushers our easier to find in the 3-4 but yes cowboys our going to the 3-4.

the cowboys like the rest of the league has drafted rookies.
while everyone hopes their draft picks will be immediate starters, they won\'t..........and while they look better for the future, this still is the present and could play a role yet.............smitty |

As to the Math of how signing Howard long term will help sign the Rookies and give us more cap room is simple....... Since Howard is a Franchise Tagged Player all of his 6.7 Mil count this year right now!!!!!!!!!! And If his contract was long term they could spread the hit out, posibly lowering the cap this year by 3.7 mil or more......... This may not Be enough For Deuce though and, the Problem will still remain, On a perfect team most of the players with high cap numbers would renegotiate, and take pay cuts for the Benifit of the Team to get to the Superbowl........... :salute: IE: New England Patriots, Winners of (as you need to hear it again) 3 of the last four Superbowls!!!!!!!!!!! |

Sure, if Howard renegotiates that will help us. If he doesn\'t, his 7.8 mil tender cost will leave us with only 1 mil in cap space (as reported on several sites, and links were given a week ago when we had this discussion the first time). That is not enough to sign our rookies, which cost roughly 3.8 mil each year. (I don\'t see as how that isn\'t enough info Billy.)
If Howard brings his cap number down around 4 mil, we should be able to sign our rookies. If he brings it down around 2.5 mil, we should be able to renegotiate Bentley, which will avoid significant problems until next year. Whether Howard will renegotiate is a pretty darned big IF right now. I haven\'t seen anything other than one unsubstantiated rumor that he may renegotiate. |
