Re: Saints Trade for Teddy Bridgewater

I think all you have to do is look at two different teams from last season to see Payton’s motivation: the Eagles and Packers. They both lose their star QB but one goes on to win the Super Bowl while the other wallows in despair with Brett Hundley.

Heck, you could also look at how the Texans fared when an injury forced them to rely on our own Tom Savage.

Bridgewater isn't in a position to demand a ton at this point. He can easily fit into our cap structure along with Brees for a few more years.

Let me clear up the confusion, Teddy is here for the Long haul. Maybe he doesn't pan out, that's always possible, but this was done for one reason and one reason only. Teddy is the Brees replacement plan.

Inspired by spkb25's sig - this seems appropriate. LOL

Shucks now I'm bummed because I'm stoked, but we probably won't get to see very much of him in the Dome tomorrow.

We have a lot of players to pay the next few years. 25 to 35 million ties up in two qb is going to hinder.

This is a good point. It’s one that I don’t really know how we’re going to navigate. Michael Thomas will be the main one after this season and he’ll want close to $20m/year.

Edit- Include Andrus Peat for big deals after this season. (Roughly $10m/year)

First of all, the cap continues to increase by around $10 million per year. And the Saints are looking good as far as the near future cap is concerned.

Brees isn’t going to last as long as everybody thinks. When he hits the cliff it’ll be sudden. You can see signs of his decline already. He’s still top 5 at the moment due to his uncanny accuracy and mind for the game, but he’s not what he used to be and I don’t foresee 3 more years. This year and next year is the best case scenario. If we win it all this year as I anticipate I don’t see him coming back...and now that we have Teddy...I’m perfectly fine with that.

Exactly. We have an extremely, young team on rookie contracts.

Welcome, Aboard!

Lol JP, this is exactly the sort of response I expected from you.

When they sign him to an extension, and he takes over for Brees in a couple years and provides us with security at the most important position for the next decade or so, you'll be happy we gave up that puny 3rd round pick.

And those talented rookies will need extended soon enough. Along with 6 starters next year.

Agree with almost all of that ... except ... Brees has stated many times that he has goals in mind before he retires. Yes, another Lombardi is one, but holding all of the all-time passing records is within reach and THAT will take this year and next for sure. When we win it all this year he'll just have to bring home number three.

triman 08-29-2018 04:38 PM

Re: Saints Trade for Teddy Bridgewater

I knew that we were going to sign a QB. Getting Bridgewater for a third is an insurance policy that could pay big dividends. For certain you are unlikely to get a player at QB with as much upside as Teddy where we will be picking in the third RD. I like the move now we need to find a TE

Agree with this
Who knows when the decline happens but all to often in sports when it happens it happens fast and isn't pretty.

I agree that if we win it all this year it will be a very tempting way to go out.

But that another earlier pick that our friend, JP, can't ponder over next year. It's like losing a pet. It has to hurt.

;)

You have to account for the fact that 3 or 4 years from now people will be retiring. Players will be getting cut. Contracts will be renegotiated. The salary cap will rise. We’ll be fine...and it’s irrational to think we’ll be able to keep everybody.

How much longer will Cam Jordan be elite? Ingram probably won’t come back next year. Unger has a couple years left. We might not even bring Peat back. Kamara will get his money. Thomas will get his money. Lattimore and Williams will get theirs. Those are our premier, young players. We have plenty of time. That’s what these GM’s get payed to do.

Payton has been learning from Bill B and the Patriot way

I was miffed when we traded Brandon Cooks but look how well that worked out

And the Patriots flipped him

Bridgewater is a low cost insurance policy
And legit answer to life after Brees

Worst case scenario, insurance on a team that could win it all. Savage and Hill wasn't going to get it done. Great move. The Saints are stacked top to bottom.

Opportunity. It gives the Saints a year to warm Bridgewater up to the idea of taking over in the future at the cost of a 3rd round pick.

I have wanted us to get him when he was in college and Im a Kentucky fan. It hurt badly to want someone from Louisville but now Im just worried he wont resign. He is young and even if he is only 90 percent from what he used to be he is in a great system for his skill set.

I think this is long term my friend. I'm sure he does want to be a starter sooner than later, but this is an opportunity he would be crazy to pass up. I doubt Drew will play more than another 2 or 3 seasons at the most. At some point the desire to have more time with his family and to devote to his multiple business interests will probably win out. And this probably makes it even easier for him. Knowing that the team he helped bring to actual relevance will be in good hands for years to come. And if the staff were only worried about a one year rental on a backup then they probably could have paid much less for someone capable. It almost makes too much sense, for both sides for him to sign an extension and wait in the wings. It has to happen.

RailBoss 08-29-2018 05:56 PM

Re: Saints Trade for Teddy Bridgewater

Now Drew can go run for President and he won't have to worry about us.

The Dude 08-29-2018 06:12 PM

Re: Saints Trade for Teddy Bridgewater

What could we get in return if we traded Drew now that we have a good Qb on the roster? I say unload him while we still have him under contract and get something for him.

SaintGnome 08-29-2018 06:14 PM

Re: Saints Trade for Teddy Bridgewater

Not that I particularly care, but I don't get this from the Jets perspective. Why bring him in, watch him look fantastic in preseason (from the footage earlier in this post), add in his work as a Vike which was at least damn solid if not very good, and then dump what looks like a good to potentially great starting QB for a measly 3rd pick next year? Are they THAT stacked at QB, are they concerned about the injury lingering, or do they just not give a crap about this season?

Beastmode 08-29-2018 07:07 PM

Re: Saints Trade for Teddy Bridgewater

Who knows their thinking. They are the Jets. Not going anywhere this year and if they lose their QB oh well. Always another year to make bad decisions.

We see how that has worked out.

This was a solid move by the Saints Front office :bng:.

That was B.I. (Before Ireland)...

For someone still very much learning the game, this thread has been a great read.

I liked Teddy in his rookie season for the Vikes so I am very happy with him sitting behind Drew. He was fantastic in his rookie year, imagine how much better he will get learning from one of the greatest QBs of all time. Even Teddy would be excited at that prospect!

Garry42 08-29-2018 07:37 PM

Re: Saints Trade for Teddy Bridgewater

This is a great move!! We now have a legit back up QB! This is a guy that can actually be a starter....its going to help us tremendously. Drew has nothing to prove, but you gotta think his competitive level just rose up a little bit!

Re: Saints Trade for Teddy Bridgewater

Okay, I guess I'll throw my 2cents in here...

We get a solid backup for the year, and if he walks after the season we get a compensatory third and still have the Jets 6th.

Having trouble seeing a downside.

But, that's just me.

I had no idea about the compensatory pick. I don’t see a downside.

Funny thing. Just yesterday a caller dialed WWL and was talking about how the Saints should take a look at Bridgewater. Both Bobby and Kristan said it was a horrible idea and he wasn’t any better than Savage or Hill. I tune in today to hear them praising the move comparing him to Russel Wilson.

They can’t really watch football if they think Savage and Hill should be mentioned with the likes of Bridgewater. We’re talking about 1st round Quarterback and former Pro Bowler. Just watch the film. Watch his movement in the pocket. He’ll actually have weapons here. We won big on this trade.
