Re: Saints will handle task of replacing Patrick Robinson on 'week to week' basis

BY JOEL A. ERICKSON | JERICKSON@THEADVOCATE.COM SEP 26, 2018 - 9:01 AM

The New Orleans Saints signed Patrick Robinson this offseason to fill a specific role.

Now that Robinson is on injured reserve after suffering a broken ankle against the Falcons on Sunday, the Saints have to find a way to replace him.

New Orleans shifted P.J. Williams inside against the Falcons, but that may not be the answer going forward. Williams struggled in his first extended action of the season on Sunday.

"It's always a challenge," Saints head coach Sean Payton said. "We'll look closely at our different lineup options and then handle it week to week."

With a sudden shortage of cornerbacks and a pair of strong safeties, Vonn Bell and Kurt Coleman, rotating into the lineup, New Orleans could go back to the three-safety sets the Saints used with so much success in the first couple of years of the Dennis Allen era.

Three safeties played more than 65 percent of the team's overall defensive snaps in each of the past two seasons; only free safety Marcus Williams, who never comes off the field, is above that figure so far.

It's not that my way is the right way, I just make the right way my way...

...so much success in the first couple of years of the Dennis Allen era...

We had a good twelve games of defense last year, don't know about years?!?

And to think....all the versatile CBs and Safeties we drafted are on other teams. Now we are stuck with Bell and Coleman, which neither of can remotely began to cover a WR or TE in space...great job front office...

Not sure what happens in those coaches meetings, but Dennis Allen needs to spend more time in film study with Nolan.

His scheme is trash.

I have been questioning the free agent scouting department for years. We have had some success with mid tier free agents like Robertson, Teo and Kelemete. We've hit on Warford, Watson, Okafor, P Rob and Ginn who was successful last year but dropped off badly this year. However, we miss more often than we hit!

I think that is the next department to get a shake up.

We have what we have. Losing Robinson may hurt, but I would expect either small or big nickel packages based upon our opponent's strengths with what we have on staff. At this point of the NFL season impact players available on the open market (that fit into cap constraints) are rare.

I have a feeling we are going to do the best with what we have. We'll see.

How well was he really doing? You guys have been acting as if we lost Deon Sanders or something.

He was our most consistent and steady DB so far this season. He didn’t give up any TD’s or big plays.

He really did play well. Its the #2 corner position that's been killing us. I think our safeties will get it together but that nickel corner is very important especially against someone like TB or Pitt. I think we can still be okay but Drew is going to have to stay on fire if we are going to compete for a SB. Hopefully when Ingram comes back we can go to our ground game and chew some clock up and keep our garbage 2 and 3 corners on the sidelines longer.
