Looks to me one of the areas that needs looking at next offseason alongside a capable pass catching TE for the long term.”

Dan Arnold is our TE of the future.

I forget he’s on the team as we’ll, until I see a #29 jersey.

Watching Eli Apple. You can kind of quickly see how he fits. He does a lot of things well. Can press. Some impressive moments of awareness playing deep zones. - Nick Underhill

I believe this is a future is now situation. If we can use a better player to improve the coverage, limit the busts, and make QBs hold the ball a second or two longer, then the defense can get better now, not a year or two from now.

I saw him jogging to the sideline after a play last week, so yeah, I mean, he's out there jogging at a minimum...

Not sure he is good locker room guy either. Collins referred to him as a cancer in the interview...

Interesting.

I just heard Landon Collins in a telephone interview (WFAN - Michael Kay show) say that he was very surprised about it all & I'm paraphrasing here ... "he's my brother & team mate. We've squashed all of that old beef. I was shocked to see the report that Eli had been traded on my phone this morning. He's still my brother regardless of the trade".

I could be wrong but he doesn't sound like a guy who was happy to see him leave NY.

Nobody knows how he was treated by the players, coaching staff etc in New York. Not one of them has had boo to say when OBJ talks crap or acts the diva, yet they spole on Apple, a easy target. Maybe he does have some growing up to do,maybe he was used as a scapegoat for a awful team. Thing is if he was a locker room issue waiting to blow you would think that one of the 3 former college teammates would have been spoke to. The guys 23,been in the league a couple of years of course he has some maturing to do. He will be in a winning team, out of New York and with former teammates, it could well be the stage he needs to progress. And if its not then they have lost a 4th rounder for a half season rental and they'll cut him in the offseason or next year. He was a high first round pick for a reason.

There's another part of this aspect I haven't seen yet: Apple's connection to Lattimore as Ohio State Football Alums. They played together 4 years ago. Reports seem to indicate that they are still boys. Hopefully the camaraderie and competition will elevate both of their play moving forward.

The bits I have read said he was great in camp and one of their best and most improved players this year. I guess we see in the coming weeks.

I'm thinking we trade the 2 before the draft so the front office can get a extended break after a superb owl run.

Re: Giants trading Eli Apple to saints

From Mike Clay who does a very good weekly WR/CB matchup column:

“Not sure I understand this one for the Giants. Apple seemed to be playing much better. Recent 1st rounder, only 23, every-down player. Seems like he'd be a good future asset.

As for the Saints, yet another win-now move. Apple will slide in opposite Marshon Lattimore and is an upgrade over Ken Crawley.“

I get its win now
But you don't get a 23 year old with 2 years on his deal and a 5th year option as only win now. If this plays out its a genius piece of work as you are very unlikely to get anything of his quality in the 4th

Rhodes is banged up. That alone is pretty big. Although after Mike Thomas dog walked him in the playoffs I don't exactly fear the guy.

Saints acquire CB Eli Apple from Giants for 2019 4th-round pick, 2020 7th-round pick
Now this is what the going rate for an underachieving first-round pick should be. When it was announced that Eli Apple was traded, I quickly wondered what the compensation would be. I came up with a fourth-round selection, and that's exactly what it was.

Eli Apple was the 10th-overall selection in the 2015 NFL Draft, and he looked awful Monday night trying to defend Atlanta's receivers. However, he has loads of talent, and he's only 23. He still has time to find himself, and it's possible he could be a late bloomer. The Saints have terrific coaches who should get the most out of him. Trading a first-round choice for Apple would've been a disaster, but a fourth-rounder is totally worth it.

The Giants, meanwhile, made out well in this trade, too. Apple had been a major disappointment for them, and it sounded like they would consider parting ways with him following the 2018 campaign. Thus, getting a fourth-round selection for him is a great move.

Unlike the Amari Cooper trade, this one is close to even. I'll give the Giants a slight edge, but if the Saints get the most out of Apple, they'll be seen as the winners in this deal.

So far, more positives than negatives. Also seems to fit what #Saints DC Dennis Allen wants to do in terms of zone coverage. Back to the tape.

Great trade. Talented guy. Upgrade over this years Crawley. Coming from a losing/troubled organization. Paired with a former college teammate. I thought the secondary was struggling more from a coaching/scheme aspect, but the bottom line is it was not getting the job done. At 5-1 with a 39 year old QB and a brutal schedule moving forward, I like it.

Good point. I bet Drew is a happy camper today.

It will if we quit dropping our best pass rushers (e.g. Cam, Oak) into coverage...

Re: Giants trading Eli Apple to saints

For me all eyes are clearly now on Dennis Allen. He has 5 1st rounders on this defense. He also brought in his guys (Coleman/Klein/Davis) via Free Agency and now add in Eli Apple. There is too much talent not to become a top 10-15 defense. We can continue to break down player by player but its time for results as unit, starting with the DC.

Dennis Allen must put his guys in place to be successful. No excuses.

Re: Giants trading Eli Apple to saints

Sometimes a fresh start like this is what folks need. Add that to the fact he is going to a winning organization that has sights on a Super Bowl and clearly thinks he can add to that... then add the fact it’s soon to be a contract year for the guy, he has every reason to play is ass off now and be rewarded for it. I love the move because it didn’t cost much and has a ton of upside.

I can’t stand the play calls... only rushing 2 or 3 at times, absolutely idiotic. However maybe adding Apple will give Allen some confidence to rush 4+ every play

Remember the JD debacle... And he should have been replaced long before he was. I am happy to see SP make the attempt here. For one thing he is very young and still on rookie contract. I think this is a good move that will help improve the secondary

It should be like a reunion out there with possibly all four DBs from Ohio St on the floor at one time. Hopefully they gel together quickly since 3of them played together at Ohio St.
