The deployment of the New Orleans Saints safeties in 2018 was a bit different than the team expected heading into the season, but the group was among the reasons for the overall defensive improvement.

I'll be very surprised if the Saints FO doesn't move on from K Coleman this off season.

Man Coleman was really unimpressive.

I think the Safeties and particularly Williams was a large disappointment. Our front 7 ended up being the best unit on the whole team. Our secondary was very shaky at times, a large bit of that due to the safety taking poor angles or breaking too late.

Sophomore jinx maybe? Year 3 is here so let's see how he performs. Usually the technique & mental aspects of the game come together.

FWIW, I thought Vonn Bell was quietly good in 2018.

Re: Saints safeties helped defense improve in 2018 but flaws remained

Flaws definitely remained.

We ranked 28th in defenses giving up big passing plays.

Seems to always be our Achilles' heel. Even in the playoffs, there was one play in the Rams game where Goff passed to a TE and all it took was one sloppy missed tackle and it turned into a huge gain. That one play was mostly why people spent two weeks hyping up the Rams TEs who turned out to do nothing in the Super Bowl.

Eli Apple drove me absolutely crazy this past year. He had some great games, including the Panthers game where he had the INT on Newton which turned out to be a key moment in that low scoring slug fest. Apple seemed to be off and on week to week. He would have a good game, then the next week give up egregious pass interference penalties or just get abused like the Dallas and Pittsburgh games where he got torched.

I agree with K Major, Vonn Bell quietly improved as the year went on.

People gave Lattimore hell all year long, but he also quietly had a good season despite all the moaning that he wasn't grabbing INTs in every game. I'm not going to give Lattimore a hard time cause he pretty much saved us from being one and done.

If a player wants to go to another team there is a reason. If the team lets him leave, there is a reason!
