Drew Brees will go through the full medical procedure to evaluate the thumb on his throwing hand after injuring it, Saints coach Sean Payton said after New Orleans' 27-9 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday afternoon.

Payton gave few specifics about Brees' injury during his postgame news conference — brushing off questions about if the 19-year quarterback had an MRI or x-ray done after the injury happened during the game.

"It was a thumb (injury)," Payton said. "Right away, when he attempted to throw, he was having pain with it. It wasn't anything elaborate.

"I'm sure we'll go through the whole medical procedure and we'll give you an update in two days."

Brees injured his right hand during the first quarter after he hit his throwing hand on the hand of Rams All-Pro defensive tackle Aaron Donald during a third-down pass intended for tight end Jared Cook.

He's likely out multiple weeks, whether it's a sprain, ligament tear, dislocation, or a break.

We're going to see what our team is made of. Tom Brady was out once for many games.

Pats had better back-ups than the Saints if I remember correctly

They went 2-0 with Jimmy G and then 1-1 with Jacoby Brissett.

That Pats team also had a much better offense than we do. Gronk was healthy during that timeframe, and it was when they had Danny Amendola in his prime alongside Edleman.

He couldn’t even pick up the ball. If it’s the UCL he’s going on IR.

Drew Brees: I’m concerned, will see hand specialist

"You're hitting your hands on stuff all the time — helmets and different things," he said during a news conference following the loss. "You might get jammed thumbs, jammed fingers, different things where it swells up and what have you. But this felt like it was something a bit more significant that prevented me from gripping the ball."
Drew Brees to meet with specialist about thumb, says injury felt 'a bit more significant'
