The Broncos won a SB a few years back with a broken down shell of Peyton Manning being carried by a great defense. It was deserved after years of him carrying the Colts into the playoffs only for their defense and special teams to cost him playoff wins. That's how I feel about Brees being carried by this defense. He carried this team for years; even in their SB year. Everyone loves to act like Gregg Williams' defensive unit was so special, but they really weren't. They are one of the statistical worst defenses to ever win a SB. They ranked in the top 3 on turnovers, but in the mid to lower 20s on every other stat. Williams' defense was shredded by mediocre QBs that year like Jason Campbell and Kevin Kolb (that one game is what made him into a household name for a year). What we got in 2010 and 2011 was the highlight of a Gregg Williams defense; they relied so much on turnovers that when the turnovers stopped, they couldn't really do anything. Turnovers is what really saved us vs the Vikings in the NFC title game. That was not a shut down defense. Brees has carried this team for over a decade, so I think he is long overdue to have a defense that can carry him. Last year was the FIRST year of his career he had a truly great defense to rely on. IMO I find these games more relaxing than the back and forth shoot outs where you have to worry about a turnover dooming us. Those games always are the most stressful cause if they lose, you'll spend all week thinking about how the defense only needed one stop, or the one turnover that ended it. |

That game from 1991 is special to me for a number of reasons. This reddit post here breaks down why it's a crazy game in NFL history. https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/comment...played_a_game/

Re: I love these ugly wins
You could actually play real D back in the day. The way the rules cater to offense now it makes our defense that much more special.
