A fake fan is one who only supports winning teams, and constantly jumps from one team to another. We call those bandwagon fans. I know you're familiar with the term. For me, my Dad went to LSU and I grew up watching LSU with him. I never went there, but they are the state school, and I've always loved them and do not pull for any other college team.

So if you have a problem with me calling myself an LSU fan, then I have a problem with you calling yourself a Saints fan. And for you to say "it wasn't like that in North Carolina" is bull crap. Yeah, you have more major universities there, but if you think that all fans of those teams went to those colleges, you are lying to yourself.

So I have a great idea, to remove all confusion. Why don't we all just pull for whoever we want to, and why don't you just find something else to complain about.

I have no problem with you, or anyone, calling themselves an LSU fan. Especially since you have the family tie. That makes perfect sense. I mentioned that as a qualifier earlier. What I don't understand are those that went to some other college, has no direct ties to LSU, and still calls LSU "their" team.

And, yes, I am very familiar with bandwagon fans. There are a lot of them here in northeast Louisiana. They are also known as Cowboys fans. A surprisingly large number of them are also LSU fans. They either never attended any college, or went to somewhere like La Tech or ULM (NSU).

And I know quite a few people from NC, and virtually all of their collegiate sports ties are either personal or familial. Many are split with some members being UNC fans and others being NCSU fans. Same with Duke, Wake Forest and ECU to a lessor degree. Much smaller schools so less of a fanbase.

As a side note, did you attend school elsewhere and if so, where?

Not challenging fanhood, just saying that I don't understand being a fan of a college team with no ties whatsoever. Especially if said person did attend a school with a sports program elsewhere. That has the stench of "bandwagonism" to which burningmetal mentioned earlier. If LSU was perennially outside of the top 25 like, say, La Tech, would they still have the statewide following that they enjoy today?

You are confused... If La Tech had the history, was part of the SEC and beat Alabama, it would be a different story. But it ain't close.

It is all about the history, the SEC and the fact that the SEC is a Super Conference in college football. Do you realize that LSUs stadium holds 102,321 fans. You ever sit in the nose bleed seat? Wow... that is high.

You don't have to have any direct ties to not only be a fan, but a "true" fan. You have a different definition of bandwagon fan from the one I referenced. I said a bandwagon fan is someone who only pulls for winning teams, and jumps from team to team. Meaning, they drop their team once they start losing and find another. That's a bandwagon fan. You can find them anywhere, contrary to your belief that they either do not exist in North Carolina, or are somehow less in numbers over there.

But if you are a fan of a team from a college you never attended, nor have any ties to, but you have always been a fan of that team, and never pull for any other team, is that a bandwagon fan? No, it is not.

I know people who grew up as LSU fans, but went to another college because it was closer, or it had a particular type of class they wanted. They remain LSU fans. LSU, as I said, is the state school. People from Louisiana want to pull for a team that represents them, and it is only natural that the flagship university is what people gravitate towards. Fans of other teams in this state are people who typically went to other schools, and grew up hating LSU because their parents hated LSU, because THEY went to other schools and LSU usually kicked their school's butts. But the majority of people gravitate towards LSU around here. Some pull for every team in the state, and don't have a specific allegiance.

In a place like North Carolina, there isn't really a flagship school. You have a number of major universities who all vary in which sports they are successful in. So it's spread out. But if you think there aren't UNC and Duke fans who went to North Carolina A&T, then you are fooling yourself. You're only comparing the fans of the major universities in North Carolina, but in Louisiana, you expect that people who go to small colleges shouldn't be LSU fans. You're not being remotely realistic.

And I did not attend a college. My father home schooled myself and my siblings, and attending college was never a practical option for me. My generation and those who are currently in college are unfortunately the targets of indoctrination, rather than education. If you want a degree in ignorance, in today's world? You go to college.

But LSU is something that is a huge part of my upbringing. It's Louisiana, it's big time level, and the majority of the players are from this state.

I could have been a Tulane, or La Tech fan. But I'm not. And it's not because LSU was always a winner. My earliest memories of LSU football were the darkest times in the history of the program... The Curley Hallman days.

So my suggestion to you is that before you assume that LSU fans are somehow mostly bandwagon fans, maybe you can go and ask each person if they just suddenly became fans one day when it was convenient. Maybe you can ask people who went to other schools in this state, but pull for LSU, if they grew up as LSU fans long before attending college. I'm pretty sure none of them will ask for your permission to pull for LSU, but feel free to poll them on their level of concern on the subject.

Thanks for explaining. As I said, I don't see anything wrong with being a fan of a school like LSU, I simply said I don't get it. I've never been much of a fan of college football. I've always preferred the pro games. While I was at NC State I couldn't really be much of a fan either since I was with the media covering the games. Cheering for "your team" is frowned upon in the press box and on the sideline. Yet, NC State is the only college team I support whatsoever.

That explains it. College football is completely different.

I love both teams but I will say that I only watch LSU when there is a meaning SEC game or a games that means something to the polls. I always watch the Saints.

Why does anybody have to be 100% fan to like a winner? I would say I am a casual LSU fan because I just don't have the time or desire to watch so many meaningless games against weak opponents. But if LSU becomes #1 and beats Alabama in Alabama, that is historic and worth watching even if you are a fan of another SEC team. I will watch the rest of the SEC games. Call me a closet fan. I'm still loving this.

Pretty much the same for me. I will always watch NC State if I can get the game. We did watch LSU/Alabama, but other than that I'm usually busy doing other stuff on Saturday.. But, I watch every minute of every Thursday, Sunday Night and Monday Night game. I watch every minute of every Saints game and watch portions of every other game on the Sunday Ticket game mix switching audio from game to game. Even when the Saints are playing I switch to game mix during every commercial.

You know? I'm kinda there, also Guido. I know guys who went to ULL, but they're all LSU, and I'm just kind of like... ?
But this is America. People have the right to cheer whatever they want. I'm not the Sports Police.
Plus, as FF pointed out, his daughter went to LSU, and prob. some of his money, so he can drive a purple and gold van, if he wants. My daughters are Aggies, and I know lots of A&M people, and it is a big deal, and I think its cool. There might be other associations for some people also. I spent a lot of time near Natchitoches, so I'd definitely root for Northwestern. Im getting a lot of customers who went to schools like Sam Houston State and McNeese. I admire people who get all into these kind of schools. If I went to Nichols St, you couldnt shut me up about it. So, salute to Thibodaux people.
I never could really get all into college, because of the disparity, the playoff system, or lack of, and also, I find the overtime bizarre. But mostly the disparity. Huge schools, with big sports budgets. Small schools with no chance. I just dont see how that's fun. I always like the underdog in college, but I know next to nothing about college football.
Of course, the atmosphere is the best thing about the college game, and all the rivalries, and hype, and LOYALTY.
I have a million friends who are all about LSU, and they dont know that I'm not so much. I feel like the gay guy at the office - where people are talking sports, when people come up to me, and say, "omg did you see that crap last night?" I'm just like, "How do I feel? I feel so betrayed, bewildered...." (anyone remember that movie line?) But these are my friends, so if LSU makes them happy, I'm glad too. Tiger Stadium is certainly an exciting place. I've actually circled it on the way to NOLA, just to hear the crowd and music, so maybe I do have somewhat an LSU Thing.

But nothing gives me a happy, glowing Monday morning, like a Saints win.
