What does the word retarded mean? According to Webster's it means "very informal, offensive". Archaically it meant, mentally or intellectually disabled.
It was actually used in a scientific setting to note these features in an individual and traditionally was not an offensive term. In 30 years will the terms "intellectually disabled" or "mentally handicapped" be considered offensive. I almost feel as if you called someone that today that wasn't "mentally handicapped" they'd take offense with it. Even if you argue that the mentally handicapped shouldn't be referred to as "retarded" , which I'm fine with.. I don't care one way or the other.... I don't see why it matters if you refer to someone that isn't mentally handicapped as retarded. I don't see how that is offensive to the "mentally handicapped". The way we look at language today, almost anything could be deemed offensive.

I know we used the word as a positive adjective for a long time in the same fashion as we utilize stupid.

That boy stupid.
That boy hard.
That boy cold.
That boy fye (fire).

All interchangeable and all meaning good/great/elite.

Yup that's another thing that makes it even more ridiculous as people have slang definitions attached to it that aren't even intended to be offensive.

Or as I explained to my teen aged daughter after she lectured me on "retard" being offensive... Retard is a mechanical term that involves slowing an engine in one of many ways... timing, restricted exhaust (Jake Brake), etc.. It is not offensive it is the technically correct term... "That moron's motor is slower than mine. He is retarded" :clown:

Retardation also carries an IQ range of <20 to 70.
