What we can assume is that Taysom is that important to the Saints offense at this time in his multi-role status...

Consider this factoid - Last season, Taysom Hill had more Touchdowns down Odell Beckham...

Considering our total lack of production from Wide Receivers not named Michael Thomas, when you look at Taysom's production, he's a bargain for the amount AG cited...
Actually I think it does because of the base salary. I actually think a lower salary long term deal would have been less indicative of them wanting him as their replacement. They are giving him the high salary to make him happy right now, they know no one will match it. I think they are planning a long term deal in the future, one in which is actual starting QB money. It's kind of hard to justify doing that right now, so they took the middle road. Nobody is giving up a 1st round pick for him, and I feel like the money is an investment worthy of a QB.. not some gadget player. Without the 1st round tender, some team may have gave him good money... but they would have been looking at him at playing QB. This is Payton's way of keeping him locked away until a long term deal can be reached. I think it may also be indicative that his snap count may increase this year.

You need to pump those brakes a bit, my friend. What high salary? A first round tag is only $4.6 million. That's less than the $7 million that Teddy had as the REAL backup last season. He would be drawing money equal to that of a WR3 or a TE2. That's role player money on a $200+ million cap.

I still don't think anyone would spend 4.6 million on him unless they had intentions for him to possibly play QB as well. That's not even close to WR3 or TE2 money unless in special situations. There were only 45 WRs that made over that in the league season. There were 21 TEs. Teddy made 7 million last year cause he is a proven starter in the league, Taysom is not. Other teams don't even know if they can even use Taysom in the way that we do. It'd be quite the risk.

Taysom Hill was tied for 33rd in the league in TD's scored. That makes him well worth a measly $4.6M in today's money.

Yes, but the way we use him, I doubt any other team can replicate. I do think a team would be wiling to shell out 4.6M for him, but the team that would do so would at least think of him as a potential QB along with the other things he does.

My point is that there is no way that Taysom Hill does not get a long term deal. Why wait on it though? The reason is if he becomes our QB he will certainly want a bigger contract than 4.6M. That is why the front office is walking the fine line though. We certainly don't want to lose him, but we also don't want to lock him in at a price yet until we've seen him behind center more. He's probably even hesitant to take a long term deal at anything around 4.6M/year cause he believes he can be a starting QB. 4.6M still not worth it for any other team that just views him as WR3 or TE2 though. It is a weird situation and I think we are playing it correctly.
