FS (2) 43 - Marcus A. Williams, 48 - J.T. Gray (ERFA 2020), 33 - Saquan Hampton
I'm hopeful Saquan steps up his game in 2020. Had a few nagging injuries last season. As for Marcus W ... hopefully he truly shines at FS and learns a lot alongside Malcolm Jenkins who understands coverages. |

RCB (2) 23 - Marshon Lattimore, 21 - Patrick Robinson, 39 - Tino Ellis (UDFA 2020) Lattimore is our best corner back - Lock; Robinson must be 100% healthy, back to his 2017 form - Bubble; Ellis is another WR convert to CB with two seasons at the position at college showing legit ball skills but he's behind the curve on his technique development, but could make the roster challenging Hardee on kick coverage - Practice Squad. FS (2) 43 - Marcus A. Williams, 48 - J.T. Gray (ERFA 2020), 33 - Saquan Hampton Marcus is our best defensive back and when he breaks down, the world knows it, but he rarely breaks down, that's why it's such news - Lock; J.T. Gray has embraced his role on kick coverage, evident by his 2nd Team All-Pro selection, and can play Cover-2 in a pinch, and he's still on a rookie contract - Lock; Hampton has flashed in practice and camp, but was put on injured reserve (Payton RedShirt?), but with two players who can flex to FS, hmm - Cut SS (2) 27 - Malcolm Jenkins (FA 2020), 36 - D.J. Swearinger (2020 RFA 2020), 31 - Chris Johnson (RFC 2020) Not sure if Vonn Bell's ego or surrounding voices did him in (he fired his agent in his contract year), but lots of draft capital and development walked out the door. Jenkins has played in some big games, has experience and for some reason Payton's trust, but he's not the athlete now, that Bell was - Lock; Swearinger can spot start for you as he's a good Pro, but at his age and with his contract, he could be exposed in camp by younger, physically more talented players who show good progression - Bubble; Chris Johnson from North Alabama hasn't found the right team (not sure why his agent had him sign here) to get the snaps he needs to develop his 6' 3" 4.42 40 speed game, but at age 24, his window is closing - Cut LCB (2) 20 - Janoris Jenkins, 29 - Johnson Bademosi (FA 2020), 38 - Keith Washington (UDFA 2020) Jenkins looked good in limited time for the Saints, very limited time, and it would be wise to get another boundary CB as insurance even though he's got an appropriate salary slot for a CB2 - Lock; Bademosi is an underrated veteran depth signing as he's played with some really good teams, smart player who was a history major at Stanford, and fell to the Saints after being stupidly cut (Tanking for Tua?) he'll contribute on special teams and can start short term - Safe; Washington has elite speed, quickness, but is light for his frame and has had a suspect history with coaching (though UWV coaching is suspect themselves), but worth investing if he can't put on a good 10-15 lbs - Practice Squad/Payton RedShirt NCB (2) 22 - Chauncey Gardner, 26 - P. J. Williams (FA 2020), 34 - Justin Hardee (RFA 2020), 35 - Deatrick Nichols (FA 2020) Football gods always seem to save Sean Payton from his foolhardy draft moves with gifts falling to the Saints in the draft. How Chauncey Gardner fell to the Saints is further proof that nearly all talent evaluators on NFL teams have their jobs because of nepotism or some other reason other than competence; I'd have not signed Jenkins and allowed Gardner to replace Bell's departure, but having him on the field is a game changer - Lock; P.J. Williams is another player who is divisive for fans, but to the smarter fans, they recognize his value as he can play nearly all the positions in the backfield, including Free Safety; and when he's healthy, strong, he's an exceptional player - Lock; Hardee has played extremely well on kick coverage and is why he's got a roster spot, but the convert to DB at the NFL level may be out of time in his CB development - Bubble; Nichols was one of the better XFL Free Agents available (S Kenny Robinson was the one to have) but simply lacks the physical gifts for a good ceiling in the NFL - Cut Seems to be a recurrent statement the last couple of years, but this is the deepest talent the Saints have ever had at defensive back; that said, not yet sold on Jackrabbit at CB2 and, irregardless, the Saints should reconnect and get Eli Apple healthy as he was playing at a near elite level before mid-season injury last year. As close as this team is - We must add another veteran boundary Cornerback... Prediction - Tino Ellis, Keith Washington, Chris Johnson and/or Player To Be Named (Eli Apple?) will make Patrick Robinson and/or Justin Hardee roster casualties... |
It's not that my way is the right way, I just make the right way my way...

Looks like it was a torn ACL for Noah Spence.
