Sean tells Schefter this is Brees' final season

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; He'll play two more years for sure. I don't know why people do this almost every single year with Brees. He's still playing at an extremely high level....

Drew Brees is no different from Brett Favre, Tom Brady, Payton Manning, even Teddy Bridgewater.

Their competitive nature drives them to want to play, even after their present organization no longer sees their value. Trust me, there is always an organization out there that will pay them to play for them because regardless of age or performance they are better than that teams options.

They don’t.... won’t... hang em up until their body says **** no one morning.

Some people prefer to go out on top, or near the top of their game. Like Elway. He could have kept playing, and the Broncos sure wouldn't have asked him to leave. But he went out on his terms. Brady has had a couple of opportunities to do that, but he's played himself into an old, average QB, who thinks he's good still good enough to rescue the Bucs, of all teams.

There's no way to know which one of these types of competitors Drew is, until we actually see how his career ends.

My gut feeling since before the start of this past season has been that 2020 will be his last year. But then he signed a two year contract. That switches up the thinking, but it doesn't necessarily mean he plays beyond next season. I think added weapons could incentivize him to play longer, provided he stays healthy. But that arm strength has significantly diminished, and if it keeps getting worse, I don't think he would want to limp to the finish line. If he stays where he is now, physically, I think the addition of Sanders, and maybe one more weapon who excels at getting open on intermediate routes would allow Brees to be effective for another couple of years.

If I had a nickel for every time I heard that, the NFL would fine and suspend me.

Brees is probably the last jedi pocket passer. Can't just stand back there Marino style anymore. Taysom, Wilson, Jackson and the 49ers misdirection playbook is the new era. Defenses are using so much technology to understand teams. Only way to defeat it is mixing things up drastically.

That was not a choice that Elway made, his body said **** no as I said earlier. It wasn't a conscious "I am in my prime, time to watch instead of play"...

If he physically could have, he would have.
"I can't do it physically any more, and that's really hard for me to say." ~ John Elway

They don't hang up the cleats because they are on top.

Brett Favre's body couldn't handle another season after the '09 NFC championship game. But he came back, anyway, because he just wanted to play.

You can't tell me Elway was in worse shape, as well as he played in his final season. His play didn't back up his words of not being able to do it anymore. The difference between he and Favre, is that Elway could feel father time creeping up faster, and he didn't want to push it. He didn't limp out into the sunset. Favre practically had to have his limbs falling off before he was ready to call it quits.

Which brings me back to Brees. Is he like Elway, and will just feel like he's beyond the limits of where he thinks he needs to be to maintain a certain level of play, or will he be another Favre and just keep playing, as long as a team will trot him out there?

If I had a nickel for every time I heard that, the NFL would fine and suspend me.

I understand what you're saying, but this is not something people are "doing", this is what Sean Payton said:
"Drew announced he will be coming back for his final season..".

Now, did Sean misspeak? I don't know. I guess we'll see. But you can't deny what Sean just stated on a major sports news network.

Drew will retire eventually. No one knows when. Not even Drew. If he gets weapons and we win the Super bowl and he still feels good he's probably coming back. I would.

With the way Payton has stacked the O so far ( and still will do more in the draft) Brees should be able to do damage, if not, this could be very well Brees last year. Better beef up the D!!
