UDFA Tracker Thread

The 2020 draft is nearing the end and UDFA signing news will start pouring in shortly. I know most of us are still trying to digest the 11th hour surprise QB pick but I’ll try to stay on top of our signings.

One guy I know we’re very interested in is Texas A&M WR Quartney Davis.

Callaway's a pretty good player. Better than some guys who got drafted, honestly.

Overview
One-trick prospect with field-stretching ability to work the third level, but lacking the route savvy and consistent competitiveness to get open underneath. Tape can be frustrating as Callaway simply doesn't play to his speed often enough and operates with a sense of lethargy at times. He's a natural pass-catcher with plus ball skills and offers punt return value, but he must improve his routes and prove he can be more than an occasional deep ball threat if he wants to hold an NFL job.

Re: UDFA Tracker Thread

These scouting reports are always so exaggerated toward the negative. I think Callaway's biggest problem is he never played with a QB who wasn't terrible, at Tennessee.

I think apathy tends to lead to "lethargy". Not that it's an excuse, but it can be a reason. For a UDFA, he's a good get.

Katherine Terrell
@Kat_Terrell
I'm told Calvin Throckmorton agreed with the Saints as an UDRFA

Player Bio
Throckmorton has been one of the most versatile linemen in the country. As a third-team Associated Press All-American and first-team All-Pac-12 selection his senior year, he started 12 games at right tackle and two at center for the injured Jake Hanson. He started at four different positions for the Ducks in 2018 (six at right tackle, five at left tackle, one at center, one at right guard), earning honorable mention All-Pac-12 honors. He was an honorable mention all-conference pick in 2017 after starting all 13 games, the first 10 games at right tackle and the final three games at right guard. Even as a redshirt freshman, Throckmorton showed his durability by starting all 12 games at the right tackle spot. He's called "Doc Throck" by his teammates because he's smart (3.8 GPA, 2019 second-team Academic All-American). He was a first-team all-state and All-Seattle Metro star on both the offensive and defensive line at Bellevue's Newport High School before signing with Oregon.

Analysis

Overview
Well-built tackle-to-guard prospect with very good core strength and displacement power in his upper body. The problem for Throckmorton is that for all his contact balance and diligence to play under control, his lower body stiffness and lack of functional quickness permeates his play in both the run and pass and will be much more pronounced on an NFL offensive line. The technique and quality of play is draft-worthy but physical limitations might make him no better than a replaceable backup.

Just agreed with the New Orleans Saints to sign my client Jordan Steckler (T/G, Northern Illinois) there. Very interesting prospect who many teams were interested in.

HEIGHT 6`2
WEIGHT 297lb
ARMS 31 7/8

Player Bio
Roach earned all-state honors as a defensive lineman or linebacker in each of his four years playing for Baton Rouge's Madison Prep Academy. He also showed versatility during his Longhorns career. Roach started five games at linebacker as a true freshman, making 33 stops, eight for loss, and three sacks in 12 games. He started three (two at linebacker, one at end) of 12 games played as a sophomore (37 tackles, four for loss, two sacks). Roach's junior campaign was interrupted by a fractured foot -- he started three games at linebacker (24 tackles, 1.5 for loss). He lined up at defensive end for the team's bowl game, just as he did in 13 starts as a senior. Roach was an honorable mention All-Big 12 pick in 2019 (40 tackles, nine for loss, three sacks, one blocked kick). Mike Roach, Malcolm's father, was an All-American linebacker at Southern University. Malcolm's community efforts include "Kicks4Kids," which helped deliver shoes to kids in need.

Draft Projection
Rounds 6-7

Overview
While Roach did what was asked of him at Texas, it was rare that you could feel his presence in terms of taking over a game or even a half. He's a short-limbed, tight-legged defender with natural power and some funk in his hands. Roach needs an efficient pathway to the backfield and is better-suited as a gapping 3-technique or maybe even a shade nose if he can add good mass on his frame. The lack of length and below-average pass rush is a concern, but a move inside should bolster his chances of making a roster or practice squad as a rotational interior defender in an upfield 4-3 scheme.

That's taller than he looks, and I think somebody added some non-existent weight, as well. I saw him play a few times, and it seemed like he moved well and made some plays. But he just looks like he'd get pushed around in the NFL.

Don't think any UDFA is making this team this year, short of catastrophic injury...

Marquez Callaway, WR, Tennessee is a stud.

I am confused on the the trade to pickup the Miss State and former PSU QB who never really started. He was going undrafted anyway.

Might have been hard to sign him as an UDFA if he had a lot of interest

He may not have come here if he was an UDFA - Payton & Co. may have gotten the feeling during their recruiting calls there was interest that may have had more sway...
