Too funny.
Looks like that is scary.

Of course.....

When he makes a catch, one hand and standing on one leg, huh. Oh yeah. This is how to practice for it.

It’s not just the balance. Musicians have hand/foot independence. He can maintain freakish balance and catch the correct color being called out when his trainer throws the objects to him.

Kamara is a stud.

But this trainer is pushing absolute non-sense.

He makes defenders look like they are falling off that ball.

How is this nonsense? Dr. Tabbah has a reputation for enhancing hand/eye coordination in players from several sports including NFL, NBA, MLB and US Olympics. He had a similar workout for Kamara last year but he's added an additional wrinkle with the ball. He has also worked with Antonio Brown.

Read: Peak by Dr. Anders Ericsson, Talent Is Overrated, Starting Strength by Mark Rippetoe and a bunch more and it will explain in much better detail than I every could.

I can tell you that this training is non-sense that these trainers come up with so they can act like are actually doing something to sell the client.

Mike Boyles is another clueless guy that doesn't even know how to coach a squat properly but has been hired by all kinds of high-level athletes. I think he has now taken down his squat video from youtube because real coaches commented and pointed out how stupid it was. I do know he turned comments off on most of his videos now.

Here's another one for you that is non-sense (she is a Judo athlete):

His comments are a bunch of non-sense gibberish along with a bunch of non-sense training.

I'm curious. Are you a Physical Therapist? Or an Athletic Trainer? You appear to be very committed that it is "non-sense". There must be some personal motivation.

Many techniques would have been considered nonsense twenty years ago in both of those fields but are now mainstays in training and rehabilitation.

Read the books I listed from the experts who are better than me but I can tell you this gets you better at a circus job but not better at football. Lots of trainers make up this non-sense so they can get paid. Perhaps we could have him catch it with his mouth next time to really show us how it is done.

I'm not any of those things myself, but did you even bother to listen to the gibberish the trainer was spouting that he was going to do for his athlete? I've always considered you an intelligent poster, even if I don't like your attitude or your opions at times. Do you have to be certified in anything to listen to listen to that stuff and realize it's nonsense? This isn't leaches, or flat earth, c'mon man.

I have no doubt that those books say what you are claiming. I was simply wondering why you have such an interest in training techniques. That's why I asked if you were a trainer or therapist. I wouldn't expect the average Joe out there to seek out books on those subjects or spend time checking out youtube videos and perusing the comments.

Are you talking about the video with the judo girl? It sounded to me the trainer was pointing out some of the same things that Jordan Palmer has touted that cutting edge trainers are doing for some of the QB's that he works with on technique. Palmer just joined NFL Radio as a host a couple of weeks ago. He said these trainers are working with new drills to maximize initial force and fine tune force transference. He explained that a QB gets most of his power from a throw from his legs, not his arm. The more of the initial force that can be efficiently transferred to the fingertips the stronger the throw.

I can see how someone might see that as gibberish or nonsense.

Jordan Palmer. (Either didn't listen to his trainers or couldn't be trained.)

He said that he doesn't have anywhere near the talent of some of these young QB's coming out now. One of the most highly regarded private pitching and QB coaches, Tom House, only won 29 games in his eight year career and saved only 33 games. He has worked with both Tom Brady and Drew Brees. It's not what you can do yourself that's important as a trainer, it's what you can do to help your client improve. Right?

My point was the "Never Was" ex NFL Busts that expound the virtues of "cutting edge training" when they themselves couldn't be "trained".

As I stated, Jordan Palmer either didn't listen to his trainers or couldn't be trained to be a successful NFL QB.

I've seen trained seals on balance beam catch a ball and hold it on their nose. Didn't make them great running backs!

As I pointed out Palmer himself mentioned that he didn't have the natural talent of many of these players receiving this training. The fact is that the vast majority of great coaches were not very successful in their own sports. "Never was" ex busts can still teach others even though they didn't have the individual talent to excel themselves. They can also know what it takes to be great given the prerequisite God-given talent. I think you can agree that those seals don't have the God-given talent to play runningback in the ;) NFL, right?

I understand.

I try to get better by even half a percent every day in everything I do - both in my job and in martial arts. The best do it this way with what is called deliberate practice which is very different from the way the average person practices. It is fascinating to me to see how people become the best in the world at things and it challenges me to get better (sometimes what the best in the world say or do is not necessarily how they got to where they are at).

So, for example, in golf most average people practice by hitting the ball on the putting green or the long range green (you can tell I don't golf). One of Tiger Woods training methods was hitting the ball from a sand trap dozens of times a day with immediate feedback - this is deliberate practice. That's a skill Tiger obviously needed and the immediate feedback on getting better at that skill made him great at hitting the ball out of a sand trap.

It is really interesting stuff.

Hi,

There is no such thing as "natural talent." Unfortunately, that is a myth propagated by a lot of people and it is frustrating because it makes people think they are unable to achieve what someone else did.

Read Starting Strength and other books by Coach Rippetoe and you will discover this is non-sense by the trainer and by Palmer. A very heavy and correctly done squat, deadlift, clean, and press will do more for power than bouncing balls on an athlete's head, etc. Lots of trainers seem to sell this non-sense so they can get paid. It is frustrating for me to see it.

Perhaps "natural talent" is a misnomer. Some people are, however more gifted athletically. You do agree that there are different muscle types, right? Fast twitch and slow twitch. My older son swam competitively in Division I at UNO. He has slow twitch muscle fibers and any amount of training would not have made him successfully competitive at sprinting. However, he excelled at distance. Someone 5'2" would never be able to play center successfully in the NBA, for example. Wouldn't you say that there are limits physiologically?

Palmer didn't discount weight work. He says that is all necessary, but small technique work can get the most out of that power. The way he described it was a QB generates what we'll call 100 bars of energy when pushing off with his foot. That energy is transmitted through the body in a series of movements - ankle, knees, hips, back, shoulder, arm, wrist, hand and fingers. Some QB's could have what would be described as a strong arm and only be retaining 75 bars of that energy as the last finger leaves the ball. Other QB's can get close to the original 100 bars of energy by eliminating wasted motions and actually deliver the ball with more velocity and accuracy than the "strong armed" QB. He said there are trainers that specialize in getting the most out of those movements.

As for Kamara, yes, he's not going to be catching a colored stick while playing the game of football, but he is working out his spatial cognizance which has to help in quickly identifying a minute opening or placement of a defender's foot allowing him to react in a manner that could improve his performance.

None of this is meant to replace more traditional training methods. It just gives them what they feel is a special added edge. Even if that edge is only mental.

While I didn't read Peak, I did read a review that spelled out the philosophy behind it. It does make sense. My excessive reading days are mostly behind me. At least deep reading. Bad cervical discs and arthritic facet joints have made extensive reading somewhat painful. I have to be more selective.

You saying 'natural talent doesn't exist is where you lost me. I have played sports for most of my life and high levels and there are people that are genetically predisposed to achieve a certain level of proficiency at something without coaching or training. Eye hand coordination is not something everyone is born with equally.

There are genetic advantages which do not mean that someone cant reach an equal level of efficiency. Some people have to work to get to a level that others walk on the field with naturally.

Leadership is one of those things that is nearly impossible to teach or train into someone.

Agreed with everything you said. Some people are natural born leaders, that everyone listens to the minute they are around.

And some people just have natural talent that can catapult them to another level, if they have the right work ethic.

My main example, I played UK NFL for around 9 years, amateur - Div 1/2 so not high level but still competitive. I had some pretty good athletic background growing up playing a ton of sports which helped me. Dropping passes as a WR annoyed me and if I ever did in training or a game, I couldn't let it go, I would spend the next week obsessing about it and trying to make sure it didn't happen again.

Felt pretty good, scored 14 TD's in my rookie year.

My 2nd year, this guy showed up that did not have a clue about the NFL rules, but was a natural athlete from playing Rugby growing up, at the time he joined, it was obvious he could be a gifted player. He had speed, he could Form Tackle which was impressive and people listened when he was around.

That same guy now has represented GB American Football team for the past 5 years and is now in Switzerland on a paid semi pro contract and all it really took was him learning the rules of football to set him apart.

Everything that doesn't agree with your 'books' means nothing or is arbitrary... You cant explain why because it is too complicated but you can comprehend... This is the message you are pushing across. Only you have answers but they are so convoluted you can not articulate them to the simpletons in this forum.

Ericsson is a psychologist and his book has nothing to do with human physiology, it is a self help book. Positive thinking, empowerment through memes sort of stuff.

Rippentoe refutes your claims and recognizes that if two people undergo the same exact training regimen and one is ahead of the other at the end... The leader at the end had a genetic head start (natural talent). BTW.. This dude is a douche to the public.

You are obviously very vested emotionally and financially in your library, good for you. People that write books do so to make money and you handed it over because the cover said what you wanted it to say.

What is the biggest market to write into? Self help for those that have low self esteem and poor genetics but want to read something that empowers them to work hard for little progress at something they aren't genetically predisposed to while ignoring their natural talents. Mind over matter, diet books, anything is possible if you set your mind to it, Tony Robbins bullsh1t... You aren't alone however, the deeply religious also have books that rationalize their beliefs and nonbelievers just need to read the books more in order to believe..

Keep reading your books and believing how you wish to believe... You may want to reconsider the tone of superiority because it doesn't paint an inviting picture.... but let me guess, you don't care, because you know what you know but cant put it into words?

Contrary to your beliefs there are people on this planet that can see something and formulate an accurate hypothesis comfortably without having to run to Barns and Noble looking for $24.99 worth of 'expert rationalization'.

Know why skilled craftsmen are diminishing in the workforce? Because parents filled kids heads with 'you can be anything you want' cr4p instead of helping them find their intrinsic talents allowing them to hone them and flourish.

When Andrus Peat can do what Kamara did in that video or duplicate JJ Watt's 61" vertical box leap come back and we can reexamine the theory that natural talent is gibberish.

If you ever want a 'spirited debate', tell someone that is/was in the military that the military does not make leaders, they make managers. Heads explode....

One of my performance objectives last year was to create a class/presentation on leadership awareness', the initial review hurt a lot of feelings.

The more ways you can challenge yourself the better. It's pretty simple stuff actually. Keep your brain working outside the box.
