I don’t get why they cut the roster down considering we aren’t having a preseason.

They cut it down BECAUSE we aren't having a preseason. The bottom 25 or so players were only on the roster as camp and preseason game bodies. Without the preseason games those ten roster spots are totally wasted resources. Lockers have to be "socially distanced" under the protocols and there is only so much space. They had been talking about a cutdown roster for a few weeks on NFL Radio if no preseason games were to be played. I'm surprised it wasn't smaller. Until recently rosters had to be cut to 75 during the preseason, but coaches didn't want to use final roster players in the last game so they got rid of that cut.

Once the season starts I wonder if the practice squad players will have any contact with the players or if they will isolate them away the team? Coaches would bounce back and forth between them so I'm not sure if it's a moot point.

They'll all be under the same protocol rules so there shouldn't be an issue. As I mentioned before, while I know several people who have been infected, they all were not following suggested protocols and/or hanging around people who weren't.
