Barry Hirstius: TRE’QUAN IN TROUBLE? Saints Receiver Competition Could Go “Down to the Wire”

I don't think Tre will lose his job in New Orleans, however he clearly has room to improve.
Anyone who blocks well will have a place on Sean Payton's team. |

Suppose to be a jump ball guru. Straight up route running he could totally get beat out by a couple receivers.

TreQ should've stepped up by now. This ain't high school no more. There is a reason we went after Sanders. He makes the team this year, but next year, likely not if he keeps up this kind of performance.

Here we go again with Payton moving players to a new position. He moved him from outside to inside where he played so well when we drafted him. No wonder he's struggling. Square peg meet round hole.

Sean Payton is definitely House Loki - It's all about MisDirection... His players are faster, get separation, always seem to beat their man to a spot because he's got defenses thinking, slowing them down to counter for anything... Saints' offense attacks in multiple ways out of the same sets, so right off, Payton's always taking away nearly all pre-snap reads... But when defenses know a WR can only run one or two routes (e.g. Ted Ginn, Tre'Quan Smith), they can sit in zones and set up to trap Brees' throws on time... WRs in a Saints' offense have more responsibilities (e.g. pre-snap reads, initial snap adjustments, blocking) than in most other conventional offenses... While you could argue we don't have the most physically talented receivers, we usually have the smartest, most prepared, most disciplined wide receivers in the league... |
