Anomalous year or not, right now the Saints are $39MUSD over the cap for next year, and it could be as much as $64MUSD. At some point in time the bill comes due, for everyone, and every organization. We all know ppl who live for the day only, and it’s just a matter of time before they’re bankrupt, been married three times, have two kids (non-custodial) paying $1200.00 a month in support which they can’t afford and are living in their parent’s basement at the age of 52. (This isn’t me!! , lol, yes I’m 52, but married only once, never again, ever, and thankfully have no kids). Organizations make the same stupid mistakes, very little difference between cap management and being fiscally responsible for a individual checkbook.

I just do firmly believe in one critical player at a pos’n of need is vastly more important than a full stable of draft picks. That being said, lol, the RW#34 trade was quite a bit excessive, and demonstrative of the fact that one player, alone, does not make a team.

I agree with quality over quantity, especially when it comes to drafting. As for the cap numbers, this is an area of the game that gives me almost as much interest as the game on the field. Not quite, but to me is far more interesting than personnel acquisition or roster structure as some of my other friends here enjoy far than myself. You can not look at future cap numbers as locked in stone. I'm sure you know that, already. There is currently $181 million on the books in base salaries for the 2021 season. The vast majority of that is subject to restructure. I pointed out earlier the accounting logic behind kicking that can and this is a huge hunk of can that can be kicked. There is an additional $11 million plus in roster bonuses that can be converted instantly without any input from the player.

hmmm, my understanding is DB#9 has a contract in place with CBSSports, contingent on only one more year of football. As far as him continuing to play, based on the immediate past, which have shown a marked decrease in arm strength, I’m not sure the best scenario is to continue watching him play into his mid 40’s. He’s now very little more than an extremely accurate dink & dunk, extremely cerebral QB, and imho, that can only go so far.

Everybody who makes a post here will see me give them due respect for their opinions and time, especially if they differ from mine. Including spkb. Trust me, if I were toxic and chose a side, belittling others, I might just have had some issues with quite a few of your posts! lol. But differences are what makes the world a better place. I’m grateful you’re around, I’m also grateful for him/her, even trolls (and I’m not making that case) May, just May, have hidden nuggets of truth inside their posts. I can see them.

Edit: Replace CBSSports with NBC.

Absolutely. There’s no mention of the haul that it would take to pry him away. You never know what kind of ridiculous offer you might get.

Bottom line is I’ve always liked the young man and hope to see him back in black and gold. When healthy he’s a very dynamic piece of the puzzle.

Nope. I believe you are mistaken there. The contract is not contingent on only one more year of football and it is with NBC. As far as I know it is open as far as a starting date dependent upon when he chooses to retire. He has said recently that he will approach the coming off-season in the same manner as he has the last several. That's why the contract is front end flexible. NBC was willing to do it to get a jump on ESPN who were interested in Brees post-career, as well.

As for arm strength, you may have missed some recent articles posted here on the off-season training Brees had working with his throwing coach, Tom House, and how they addressed any concerns with arm strength. It appears to being paying off with many commenting about the additional zip they are seeing on his ball and his accuracy downfield thus far in camp.

And he wants to be here, as well. As I mentioned earlier, all part of the dance.
