From USA Today SaintsWire: New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton commented on Marcus Davenport’s elbow injury, saying that he doesn’t expect the DE to be sidelined long

That said, if the time missed was expected to be more than two weeks he would have been placed on (what gosaints1 brought to light) the 3 week IR. Unlimited players can be placed on this and returned after three weeks. There is no reason to bring him back this week if he was truly needed to take on the Raiders. I'm just happy to see Ruiz back out there.

I have no doubt that Davenport will have a very material impact on our success this season.

Unless Davenport balls out and stays on the field the rest of the year I will be ready to call him a bust. You can have all the athleticism and talent in the world but if you can’t stay on the field it means squat. If he was a late round pick or an USFA he would have a little value maybe but given the draft circumstances that ain’t the case.

Well...Hendrickson played well in his absence. At least that's what I read. Regardless, at least the guy can stay on the field.

I love Davenport’s ability when he does play but I’ll never understand why we felt the need to make that investment in him. Super raw coming out of college, showed up to training camp in year two out of shape because he was battling mental health issues, now he’s not playing yet in year three.

But where is he going to be the rest of his career? He may end up as a Saints great. Let's let this play out.

What did you see from him and Granderson and how they impacted the game? I felt it gave both a chance to advance their development.

He certainly still has time. However, after this season we have to decide if we’ll pick up his fifth year option and at this rate we definitely will not. That’s a bad look for a guy we traded up for.

You may not pick it up at this point, but I have a feeling they have more confidence in him and would.

Unless Pride, refusing to admit it was a bad draft move, gets into the machinations of that decision...

Which it very well may. Of course, that may not be known yet by the time the decision is to be made. Watch us let him go after four years and he goes elsewhere and becomes a HOF DE.

I can just hear the griping around here already.

:D

Don't rush Mike Thomas back. Football is a marathon and a grind for months, not a sprint.

This is a high ankle sprain injury we're talking about. If Sunday was the NFC title game, sure suit him up and lets go but we're not. Lots of football left to be played.

Other guys will need to STEP UP at the WR spot.

It sounds like it is Thomas that wants to press through. I read earlier that they were considering the IR, but he basically talked them out of it. I can't find the story now. It on my facebook feed.

Re: Saints at Raiders Wednesday Injury Report

Dr. David Chao also appeared on NFL Radio today addressing the Thomas injury. He said people need to understand there are differing degrees of high ankle injuries. He said it may just come down to a matter of pain tolerance. He also said the player, the team, and the medical staff all need to okay a decision to play. Any one of the three have an absolute veto power. He said the medical staff includes the trainers, as well as the physician. In other words, if he does play then all parties decided with all the information at hand that he was ready.

He also brought up the point of the 3 week IR and the fact that since the Saints have not place him on that list the injury must not be very serious.

Excited to see what Ruiz does. But I'am losing hope in Davenport. The talent is there no doubt but if you aren’t on the field what good is it

He has missed eight games out of 36 in his career including playoffs. It isn't like he has never seen the field. He has never missed more than three regular season games in a year. You are feeding into the negative hype, LS83. He is only one game into his third year and he was an absolute stud last season. Talk to me after week eight.

Now slowly back away from that ledge. As the great philosopher Aaron Rodgers once stated, "R-E-L-A-X. Relax."

Aaron Rodgers is a douche and a half, lol. That said I mean come playoff time when we need him he’s on ir. When it really counts

Second, but I can tell you from experience, no not NFL experience, but he should continue to play with a hard limited snap count...

Had one of those in college and rest, rest, rest cost me my maximized athleticism and I was never the same...

They should keep him moving, but limited...

I hear this opinion a lot when someone doesn't like a player and I find it interesting. I heard this also most recently about Tre Quan. A lot of our picks are starters for other teams right now. Where was the pride ,and ego then? Rattling off the top of my head Cooks, Stills, Hicks, I'm sure there are more. IMO if they're still here, there's a reason and it's probably not "well, I drafted him so high, I would look bad letting him go"

The best ability is availability.

MD is in a make or break year. If he can't get his health and availability in check, things could spiral out of control after year #3 and his name will be in the pantheon of top 5 Saints disappointments.

The front office certainly didn't spend a 1st & trade next year's 1 to draft out of luxury. They want results.

We could definitely use some help at the DE spot..... Davenport has been dealing with that elbow for a while now & sounds like it going to be a problem for him. After last season, I thought he would turn a corner but he simply can't stay healthy.

Nope. For Payton, especially the last few years, it's pride, pride in his legacy...

Davenport has played 13 games each season

it's not like he is wishing this

if they are keeping him out - the doctors have a lot more insight than a fan forum board

let things heal and make a run

He played two of our three while he's been with us. The only one he missed was last year. He played both against the Rams. Patience.
