I think Payton was playing to Lutz psyche and trying to instill him with some confidence... or perhaps I'm bat**** crazy. Remember, Lutz missed a kick earlier in the game from a short range. Payton may have been trying to give him a boost. It's easy for kickers to lose their **** after a miss.
Morstead didn't spin the ball for whatever reason and Lutz kicked the laces. I don't place the blame on Lutz for missing that one.
