Re: Question about the GW FG in OT

I'm guessing he had enough trust in Lutz to make it.

Whilst it does make sense to wind the clock down, what would happen if there's a problem with the exchange between McCoy and Brees and its fumbled. Then everyone would be mad that Payton didn't take the opportunity to kick it.

Each perspective has its ups and downs so I'm guessing Payton just trusted Lutz enough to send him out there.

It doesn't make much sense...

Logically, you either take a knee or hand it off with ball security being the goal to run the clock down.

Had Lutz missed your giving the Bears 1:30 to go about 40 yds.

Luckily we have a good kicker so it didn't matter.

WHAT IF............A small private plane crashed into the stands?

The 40-14 trouncing by the Steelers on December 19, 1976 is likely the best loss Baltimore Colts fans ever experienced — even for an AFC divisional title game. That’s because so many fans left early, there were few people in the stands when a plane that had buzzed the stadium multiple times crashed into the upper deck about 10-minutes after the game ended.

It was the right move for Payton. Lutz made the kick and we won.

Kick the field goal ... its overtime once the ball goes thru the uprights game over ... You trust your kicker End of Story ... You do what Coach and the Saints did.

Re: Question about the GW FG in OT

I think SP was playing the mind game for later in the season. I bet even Lutz was questioning why we didn't run the clock down. Payton though was like "I have 100% faith in you, so I don't give a ****.. go out and win the game". I think Payton was playing to Lutz psyche and trying to instill him with some confidence... or perhaps I'm bat**** crazy. Remember, Lutz missed a kick earlier in the game from a short range. Payton may have been trying to give him a boost. It's easy for kickers to lose their **** after a miss.

Okay, don't trust Kamara enough to punch it in or even hang on to the ball?

Fine, then have Brees take a knee a couple of times, leave less than 0:20 on the clock in the event of a mishap - like the one earlier in the game...

Some are trying to give Payton credit for thinking ahead, building confidence in players - Don't...

The sampling is there in the last few tight games and in the tournament where Sean fumbles mentally in the crucial moments, under pressure...

Each kneel down backs the ball up two yards. Just saying. Why make the kick intentionally longer?
