The steal at QB in the next NFL Draft

I think it will be Ian Book. Hoping we find a way to draft him.

He reminds me a little of Jake Plummer. Just watch Ian, he has a lot of composure, seems hard to rattle. Does a nice job of escaping the pocket and making the right play. Ian doesn't have spectacular Aaron Rodgers or Mahomes throws - but with the young skill players we have on offense (Kamara, Thomas, hopefully Trautman) - we just need a QB with the ability to spread the ball around and give the pass rush headaches. If we could get Book in the 6th or 7th round and have him backup Brees for a year and then take over ... that could be something!

I hate to tell you guys this... but Jameis is taking over next year. Payton is enamored with him. He’s been a slam dunk fit in the locker room.

Is Payton keeping Jameis out of the limelight to get him on the cheap

He deserves to be paid above journeyman’s wages this year

I want Jameis to be our starter for a decade in 2021 and really learn and mature at the clipboard behind Drew

Wish they would have let him loose agains his old team sunday night

I do want to see him surprisingly come in and launch a bomb

Considering Teddy got solid money after his 5-game stint, keeping Jameis tucked away and seeing if we can address faults that led to the high INT numbers in Tampa seems like a real good strategy. If Drew retires, we have a lot of options. Ian Book could be great value as a backup. This QB draft class is crazy deep and there is good depth at the QB position as a whole in this league. With the way the NFL protects QB's I don't think we'll have the Billy Joe syndrome ever again.

You may get to see him yet. Hold your horses and be careful what you wish for.

Winston was the #1 overall pick for a reason. His ceiling is EXTREMELY high. He has arm strength. He has accuracy. His football IQ was compared to Peyton Manning. His only problem has been decision making. I think it was a result of a lack of maturity. That typically gets better with age. Our future is bright if you ask me.

Highly unlikely Sean P goes to the draft in hopes of finding a replacement QB for 2021.

Re: The steal at QB in the next NFL Draft

I'll give Winston a pass for coming in cold yesterday. He actually started decent and then he was missing throws and reads. People give Brees crap about the dump offs but yesterday Winston missed 2 of these which would have served in 2 ways. One avoid the sack and two keep the clock running.
Maybe practicing this week with first team will help him but listening to Hebert last night he said Winston misses open receivers in practice.

I was watching him this weekend and really impressed with his skill. I saw great touch and accuracy on a 30 yard corner route. There was a laser to the far sideline to get the ball there before the defender. Good pocket presence. This kid will be a winner if he gets the right situation.

I am going to say tap the brakes on Jameis and lets see what happens. I noticed Jameis almost threw a bad decision interception and on a play where he ran it could have been easily knocked out of his hands. What I am saying is there is no dispute over his talent, the decision making may not have improved.

If Winston is the man, then pay the man.

"I try to give everybody my all. I try to be right there with Drew along the way, watching film with him, preparing with him. So I felt like I went out there and I was prepared to lead this team. And I'm happy that my teammates had my back and they went out there and executed well and things went our way." - Jameis Winston

Saintfan likes this.

"He led us to an important scoring drive, led us to another field goal drive. The one thing I would say with Jameis, too, is he's extremely bright. So functioning and understanding what we're doing, he picks it up quickly." - Sean Payton

So many people say Winston isn't smart. I call BS. I'm the last guy in the room who wants to see Drew retire. I'm the first guy in the room who wants to see Taysom get a shot. If Sean says Jameis is the man then he's the man. Sean knows QBs.

If Hill was the man he would have played far more when Breed was out last year. He's a weapon and he's paid to be one. He is what Tebow should have been(assuming he could catch and run routes)

+1.

Ultimately, that's all that matters.

What Sean feels and what he says are not necessarily the same in this case. Even if he thinks we are in deep sh!t with Winston "under center" he has to portray total confidence in what the dog dragged in.

Let's not discount Jameis Winston beyond this season.

If you've heard Sean P talk about Winston over the last several weeks, he sounds supportive and encouraged about what he brings to the table at QB … long term. When CSP was the QB coach up here (Dallas), he said similar things about a raw Tony Romo. Polished him up into a top tier QB.

Time will tell on JW though.

I have to totally agree, never want drew Brees on the bench but it is what it is. Next man up

This has nothing to do with Drew retiring and has nothing to do with Taysom starting. It has to do with how Winston's effectiveness will be. I truly hope the best for our team. Winston has a chance, it started yesterday.

Regardless, Jameis will be your starter on Sunday AG. It's time to accept that. The next Pat Mahomes isn't on the roster right now.

Brees is seriously banged up right now & needs time to heal. If we get him back at the start of the playoffs ... GREAT. If we don't, we have to roll with what we have.

Winston is not smart. He has no pocket awareness. If his first read isn't there it's over. He is a turnover waiting to happen. Teddy doesn't have the physical skills of Winston, but he's an infinitely better NFL QB.

Not to mention no touch on his passes, every one he threw including the near pick was just a bullet pass.

No ****. Although I expect he'll be back well before the start of the playoffs. I just hope that Winston and company don't put us in too much of a hole for Brees to bring us through.

One more thing. I think this guarantees Brees returns for another season. I cannot imagine him quitting on a partial season. No way. That's not in his DNA.
