If Brees was traded
Alright guys hear me out. Just to clarify i'm not saying we should trade Brees. What i'm saying is if it happened I do not believe we would take much of a hit. I haven't really been happy with the saints since the loss on Sunday so I've just been thinking. If we drafted a QB in the first round and kind of had Drew take him under his wing for two years to teach him the ways of a NFL QB. I think the Saints style of play does not need an Elite QB but rather a "Game manager." It would certainly help our cap issues and I'm sure we could at least get 2 first round picks. This would give us the opportunity to draft players to replace people like Colston, Harper, Vilma, and Smith. Not even to mention build a halfway decent O-line. I know i'll receive hate but it's just an idea, I love Brees with all my heart and I was a fan when we picked him up in free agency but it doesn't seem like he is putting in the work like making Nick Toon better and rather making Wrangler commercials to build up his already monstrous wealth. He was so arrogant when it came to his contract, we asked him to take the Tom Brady way, but instead he held out and took the selfish way out and now he is paying for it and taking sacks at an alarming rate because we have no money to pay for better lineman. What do you guys think?

I think we would be 2-6 now without Brees. Enough said.

I'd like to draft a highly talented QB in the 1st round and have him mentored by Brees (hell, who wouldn't?). Have that talented QB marinate for a year or so with Brees, then trade Drew for a 1st and 2nd rounder. I doubt any team would give up 2 1st rounders for a mid-30's QB even if it is a Future HoF'er QB unless we're talking Oakland, Cleveland, or Minnesota.
I obviously don't know Drew Brees personally, but I've got the feeling that after the beating he's taking and will be taking this year plus if we miss going deep in the playoffs that he will give back to the organization to sign some help on that O-line and defensive side of the ball. If we don't draft a center in the 1st or 2nd rounds in 2014 I may not survive as the thought of seeing DLP play center again next year on this team could possibly kill me. If Brees does NOT give back ala Peyton Manning and Brady, I'll be shocked and certainly disappointed. But I can't hate too much; dude was a Super Bowl MVP...in a Saints uniform. That's gotta count for something. |

Re: If Brees was traded
1. If you trade Brees how can he take him under his wing
2. Why would you want a manager when you have a winner 3. Out of decades of the saints history without a Elite Qb, why would you go backwards 4. Why not draft or trade for better OL instead of look for a game manger qb 5. All of those years fans was complaining that saints was not spending enough to be real contenders, why would you want to go back to those dramatic days 6. So you're saying you would paid to keep Carl Nicks and traded for a game managing qb 7. Do you think Matt Ryan, Tony Romo & Joe Flaco deserve a better contract than Drew |

Re: If Brees was traded
Hmmmm interesting post, i do believe some brees or payton bad talk is taboo on here if some think your going too far but both are human and neither are perfect all the time. That being said they should draft a future qb prospect that will fit the system. As much as i hate to say it but brees won't play forever and yes his contract is killing us to a certain extent just like flacco, ryan, and others big overpriced qb contracts are but to me you get rid of the players like harper, vilma, smith to name a few that aren't producing cause of injuries or lack of production/past their prime. Cutting some high salary players like them would free up money to sign better younger players but keeping the ones worth it.

Yes, I'm certainly glad we didn't spend the 20 M on Ryan or Flacco, that's for sure

Re: If Brees was traded
I don't have my finger on the exact quote handy, but Sean Payton has already said that he intends to someday leave the Saints, but he wants to leave the team in a position to win -- the implication between the lines being that at the very minimum, he will set us up with a QB after Brees, before Payton retires or leaves at the end of his contract. When he talks about long term plans for the team, he talks about "the window." When he does that, he is talking about Brees and him, as a pair, and the "window" he refers to is basically, a code word for him and Brees.
Payton has definitely said that he feels it's important to him, for a head coach to leave a team in a position to be able to continue winning -- basically to leave the place better for the next guy, than it was when you found it. That's part of his philosophy, it's very important to him as a coach and a person. He is not the kind of coach who would leave a team in disarray, where it takes years and years to fix the mess. I don't see how trading Brees possibly fits into that scheme of things. As for your issue with the Wrangler commercials, you are seeing them now, but they were shot months ago, in the off season. You can tell by the foliage on the trees, in the background, that it is not fall (it actually looks to me like City Park, but I'm not sure). |

I'd be OK with trading Brees, if I can get Andrew Luck in return.
