We have all heard players on TV thank God for helping him make a play, or achieve an award, etc.

I don't understand why the league wouldn't let RG III wear a non-Nike shirt but didn't do anything about the other player's non-Nuke shirt.
Probably because the shirt being Nike or non-Nike has nothing to do with it. Praying and thanking "god" is totally different than "Jesus" . "God" can be any god and praying can be praying to any "god", but Jesus is not as easily accepted in this society and its Muslim leader.

Well the article says

According to NFL bylaws, players are prohibited from wearing clothing with personal messages on game-days.

“Throughout the period on game-day that a player is visible to the stadium and television audience (including in pregame warm-ups, in the bench area, and during postgame interviews in the locker room or on the field), players are prohibited from wearing, displaying, or otherwise conveying personal messages either in writing or illustration, unless such message has been approved in advance by the League office.”
I guess that the five four logo doesn't count as a personal message. I can kinda undestand the leauges position; they would be heading down a slippery slope if they allowed personal messages, soon we eould have political statements and probably all kinds of distractions and controversy.
