Just do the usual touristy stuff the 1st time, thats my suggestion. Even "hip" "undergroundy" people like the French Quarter, they just wont admit it. Bring lots of cash, you'll need it. Dont play with the "I know where you got them shoes" guy. Find a group of strangers to share the cost of it, and ride the mule/buggy deal around. Do a paddle-wheeler ride... check out the voodoo shops, look at all the weird people at Jackson Square. Do the Cafe DuMonde beignet thing. check out the riverwalk and moonwalk. See some plantation homes if you can. Musee Conti (wax museum) on Conti is not only a kickass museum, but a great primer on N.O. history. See Chris Owens show--- she's about 100, and still has the body of a 30 yr. old, and stop in every club on Bourbon St. including the gay stuff. Dont look like a tourist--- instead dress Saints, or Ghetto, or Biker, or Redneck, never like a yuppie tourist. Everyone who's ever been to N.O. goes to Pat OBriens & gets hurricanes. They taste like kool-aid, so drink lots of them and drink them fast--- they wont do anything bad to you. trust me.

Then if you must get "local" the bohemian clubs are on Frenchman street over by Esplanade.

Most of this stuff is considered touristy, but who shives a git what is supposed to be "cool?" "undergroundy" people live with their mama. Have fun and dont worry. Dont do anything wacky till you see somebody else do it first. This is your basic crash course in New Orleans.
This is almost exactly what I tell people going to the city for the first time. I have one question, though. What is the moonwalk? I've never heard of it.

Re: 1st time in new orleans

Alright my friend - best places to go and not eat "touristy" crap food and get shafted on drinks. You'll be in the mix of everything going on but be able to avoid a generic experience.

Good luck and GEAUX SAINTS!!

Breakfast:
Stanley in the French quarter at lafayette square $$ (awesome food - great view)
Cafe Du Monde $ (you've gotta have beignets and coffee)

Lunch:
Mothers $$ (probably a line around the block, but the Debris Sandwich is RAD)
Yo mammas - Fr quarter $ (awesome burger selection)
Port of Call $ (What Yo Mammas is now, they were 10 years ago before they started to slack)
Mr. B's Bistro $$ - Best BBQ Shrimp in town (real new orleans style)
Bourbon House $$ - Great oysters and located at the bottom of your hotel

Dinner:
Cochon $$
NOLA $$$ (Emeril's good restaurant)
Herbsaint $$$
Domenica in Hotel Roosevelt $$$

Drinks:
Hotel Monteleone - The Carousel Bar $$ (yes it rotates) $$ (down from your hotel)
Lucy's $ (packed w Saints fans before game and short walk to Dome)

Walk up Poydras to the game and you'll see kids selling canned and bottled beers for $3 and plenty of bars w mixed drinks.
