Trotter to be released?

The Redskins and C Cory Raymer have come to an agreement on a three-year contract worth $3.1 million, according to the Washington Post. Raymer returns to Washington, where he played from 1995 through 2001, after being released by the Chargers last week. He’s expected to vie for a starting spot in the middle of the line with Lennie Friedman. The signing could mean last year’s starting center, Larry Moore, could be toast. Releasing Moore would save the team about $1.3 million under the salary cap. … The team is waiting to hear back about an offer made to Panthers LB Greg Favors, who also is being pursued by the Jaguars. … Giants LB Brandon Short visited the team yesterday and also is in the mix, and former Bears LB Warrick Holdman reportedly is set to visit the team Monday. Why would the team be going after all these linebackers, especially ones with experience inside? It’s speculation, but MLB Jeremiah Trotter could be let go after June 1, which would save the team nearly $3 million in cap space. Of course, by doing so, they would take a $4.6 million hit next year. Trotter signed a seven-year, $36 million contract in 2002.
This would cure what ails us in the middle. Then we could have the freedom to trade up and get Eli.

Why bring in a overrated, overpriced MLB, when chances are we can get either Jonathon Vilma or D.J. Williams to play the middle?

What does this have to do with trading up and getting Eli? It said Trotter could be cut after June 1st, two months after the draft. It will have zero effect on what we do come draft day.

Besides, we would be better off getting Vilma. Trotter is very over-rated and has had two bad years in a row.

I\'m really not getting the fascination with either Gamble or Vilma.
One hasn\'t played the position but for a few months, the other is a product of a system and it will be a crap shoot if either becomes a quality player on the next level. But even so, neither one of those guys makes it to #18.

Trotter has been in the most underutilized pool of defensive talent in the entire league for the past two years. We need run support and pass rush, Trotter gives us both of those things if we use him right. He also would be pretty affordable.

On the other hand, I am truly mystified by all the Manning hate on this board.

But Vilma and Gamble will not be there at the 18th pick and I don\'t think the Saints should trade up to get them... when good players will be there at 18 and in the second round... Only player I\'d trade up to get is ELI If the Chargers don\'t pick him are trade down... I\'d say we better do something to get him. I hate to see him in Oakland.

I don\'t think that there is Manning hate on the board. I just think (speaking for me), that we are tired about always hearing about trading up for Manning. Realisticly, that WON\'T happen. Even if he doesn\'t go first, he will not get down to 18, and I really don\'t think we have anyone to trade away for to get in the position to reach him, (at least not without trading away the future of this team).
I know that a lot of people don\'t feel that it\'s realistic that we will get Gamble or Vilma at 18 either, but at least that is within this relm of possiblity.

Well, most of us aren\'t getting the fascination of trading for Eli. At least getting Gamble or Vilma or even both is a possibility since there is always a chance a player might fall farther in the draft than expected (see Deuce McAllister). If we were in a position to get him, I\'d be all for it, but we\'re not. We\'d need to be at least top 10 already to trade up that far. Just remember how much it cost us to move up to get Ricky and that was only moving 6 or 7 spots at most. You\'re wanting us to move more than double that many spots.

And no, I don\'t think there are truly any Manning haters here. You have to kind of respect Archie for what he did for the franchise (and what he probably gave up had he gone to a decent team) and Peyton has proven to be a star in this league. The problem is that every time the wind blows we have to read about how that means we should trade up to get Eli when the sane members of this board realize it isn\'t going to happen barring some divine intervention.

My advice would be that every time you get the urge to write on this board about how we need to get Eli you should drop to your knees and pray to God that it will happen instead. At least then you might be increasing the chances in your favor.

I don\'t mean to be the nay-sayer, but our last few high defensive picks haven\'t exactly been out of this world. Both Grant and Sully are good players. Both can develop into very good or great players. Neither is enough of an impact guy to make a huge difference. A rookie at MLB is not something I\'m real big on. Give me Gold. If not Gold, give me Trotter or Barrow and draft someone to be an influence 3 years from now. The Saints need to make a move NOW. Not three to five years from now. I\'m tired of hearing about all this young talent and potential. At some point the potential has to translate into results.

Have you ever even seen Vilma play? That guy can and will step in from day one and be a major force. Not many players can do it, but I believe he will. Taking a corner in round one is the mistake. That would be one that would have to develop. Not to mention the first round corners this year aren\'t much more talented than the second round guys. There are no stand-out corners this year. We need to go LB, and that LB needs to be Vilma.
I know I have said this over and over, and it\'s probably about as annoying as the Eli freak, but it\'s the truth.

And why do people keep mentioning Gold and acting like he will fix out MLB problems? The guy is a OLB. He would be a great signing, but we still need a MLB.

And coming from the opposite side of the field, I\'ve never understood your Manning pipe dream. Why would we trade 2 of our top impact players for a guy who won\'t even be able to contribute for two seasons?

I think some people just can\'t get over the name \"Manning\". I mean yeah, he\'s gonna turn out to be a pretty good QB, I\'m confident in that. But why sacrifice the team for him? I mean honestly, how good were we the last time a Manning was the QB of the Saints? And thats the same place the Colts will be in a couple seasons, when Petons massive salary starts to inihibit the teams ability to compete.
