Drew Brees applies deadline to talks with Saints on a new deal

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; Drew has all the leverage. Might as well pay him now even if we can't get much of a cut to help the team. It's only going to get worse....

Deal with a new contract when he turns 40

Two can play at this game.
I don't think we actually can play that game. In either '17 or '18 the 44% raise clause would kick in for a QB being tagged more than twice... so 25 million in '17 would be 36 million in '18... not that we would sign the first one anyway

if he was francised next year his cap number would be 44 million no way you can pay a single person on a team sport and feild a decent team .thats moronic if it was to be done. like i said before i love Drew to death and greatful for all he has done for us but i think its getting time to move on to the future as great a he has been you can see he is losing some of his skills.

Posturing. In the end he'll sign somewhere between what he wants and what we offer.
If not, I'm ok with moving on if necessary

I do wonder if the front office is seeing what happens next year. Play well/show signs of contendibg get him a new deal. Another 7-9/8-8 and just go into full rebuild mode with plenty of cap to do it.

As it stands
Ryan Nassib
Mike Glennon
Kirk Cousins

Are all FA next year. Not saying any are franchise QBs but if my theory is right about thr front office waiting to see what happens they could be worth a look

Of a EJ Manuel and Geno Smith and we can all pretend its the 85-05 again

I don't blame him for trying to get as much as he can. I said that, to begin with.

Yea we see him making so many millions a year but we dont know what his financial situation he is. For all we know his Jimmy Johns venture is putting him in the hole a couple million a year. I dont care if you make 100 million a year, if your losses in other business ventures are 99,999,999 you arent making squat.
I fail to see how any players money mismanagement is a concern for any front office or the fans. Deuce lost everything. I hate it for the guy but he listened to the wrong people. Like so many other players.

I realize the Bernie Sanders mindset is appealing but you cant blame a guy for trying to make as much money as he can. Agents make you sick because they try to get every dollar they can?? Thats their freaking job.
Bernie Sanders has nothing to do with anything. I realize it's an agents job to get as much as they can. I guess I shouldn't say I don't like lawyers or politicians; my God, I might get executed for giving a random opinion.

I wonder how many of you would tell your boss you dont want a raise "because its best for the company" when your time comes.

Many people do. How many times have you worked when you were off, or missed a birthday, anniversary, or cut a vacation short because you were needed at work? It is generally the same thing.

Look, my point was the point of view from a fan that is tired long, drawn out, beating of a dead horse, bickering back and forth of a contract. That's all. I'm not satisfied with .500 or lower seasons. I'm not bashing Drew, but damn, get a deal done and sign the thing.
Not attacking you Dude. I just want it done, like everyone else does.

Re: Drew Brees applies deadline to talks with Saints on a new deal

I stand corrected. we can not play that tagging with Drew. I forgot we lost the arbitration claim in 2012, Crap

That’s the closest Brees or his agent have come to pointing out the reality that, if the Saints allow Brees to play out the final year of his five-year, $100 million contract, the circumstances will change, dramatically. They’ll change thanks to the arbitration claim filed by Brees after the Saints applied the franchise tag to him in 2012, which resulted in a ruling that the next application of the tag to Brees will be the third of his career.
