I had the same reaction ... 25? I'm wrestling with this one, Torres was a repeat offender, but we've all seen worse, more flagrant hits. I'm thinking Shannahan just had to send a clear message and get the playoffs back under control. I also think the NHL is going to go the way of the NFL and start cracking down on this stuff in order to protect themselves from potential lawsuits ... contact sports should be put on the 'endangered species' list, .

Just saw it this morning, Giroux is suspended for Game 5 ... I totally disagree with Shanny on this one and here's why: 1) It simply was not a vicious or intentional hit, despite what Shanahan says. I think he's going too far trying to read into player's intentions when he looks at the entire shift and actions during that shift as he did with this incident, ''When you look at this shift in its entirety, including the violent chop of the stick coupled with the lateness of the hit, we feel this reckless picking of the head rises to the level of supplemental discipline,'' Shanahan said. ... 2) It very well could be the deciding game of a playoff series, I disagree with the officials calling penalties or handing out suspensions that could decide or have an influence on the outcome of a game. 3) There was nothing flagrant or wrong with that hit. Those type of hits happen all game long. If they're going to start suspending guys for hits like this, there won't be anyone left to play the games. This call is as bad as some of the 'protect the QB's head' calls you see in the NFL. Bad call, Shanny. :- p

I didn't see the hit, but you make it sound as BS as that "Roughing the passer" hit KVB did on Aaron Rodgers last year.

Yeah, Shanahan let things get out of hand in the first round by not taking action against Shea Weber for pounding Zetterberg's head against the glass in Game 1 of the Nash/Det series ... so know he's got to over-compensate in order to get things back under control.

That call against Giroux pretty much was like the KVB 'RTP' hit on Aaron Rodgers ... when a skater is coming up the boards with the puck, one of the ways to check him off the puck is to 'skate through his hands' and use the boards ... that's exactly what Giroux did, it was a textbook check, something I taught my kids to do ... the contact with Zubrus' head was incidental and did not rate a one game suspension, IMO. It is much like the bogus roughing-the-passer calls you see in the NFL where the defender brushes the QB's helmet and draws the flag.

It's the dawn of a new era in American sports and I'm not sure if I like it or if I'm ready for it.

We'll with KVB, it was a completely clean hit, and I don't think he hit Rodgers head, although Rodgers agreed with the refs because "I have this little cut on my chin." Not to mention that it was within the window after he threw the ball to not get flagged (basically upon release)

Quiet 2 weeks for Shanny, and now Dustin Brown. Not as bad as Smith and Doan cried about it, but seriuosly, how do TWO refs miss that?

You know, I was watching that game & when it happened, I didn't think it was anything more then a mid-ice collision ... so this morning I see they're crying for a lifetime ban on that hit? IDK, I think 'bountygate' and the NFL concussion lawsuits are leeching over into the NHL ...

I watched this YouTube over & over and I don't see it ... the intentional knee, that is. As with many big hits in hockey, Rozisval (the addressee) has his head down, doesn't see it coming & doesn't take evasive action ... when I look at Brown (the sender), his knee is in line with his shoulder when he makes contact and his skating posture is correct, no 'kneeing' penalty there ... looking at Rozisval, I almost thought he was hanging his knee out there, but upon further review, his skating posture was correct for what he was doing at the time ... SloMotion's ruling: incidental contact.

The ref's didn't make a call because it was a playoff game & tied in the last few minutes ... I could have seen 2-minutes for roughing or something minor like that, but I don't think it was kneeing ... of course, I've been way off with most my calls this postseason, so it probably warrants an attempted-murder charge, .

I don't envy Shanahan, those kind of hits happen all the time in hockey and mid-ice collisions are the nature of the game, ruling on this one is gonna' set a precedence and open up a big ol' can of worms for the NHL, IMO. I call 'sour grapes' on Doan & Smith, I didn't agree with the 25-game Torres suspension either.
