Re: Just The News | Taxpayer funding for NFL, other pro sports stadiums grows exponentially
I honestly see both sides in this. Living in the Bay Area I watched how two different “cities” handled their sports franchises in Oakland vs San Francisco.
Long story short, Oakland lost the Raiders, lost the Warriors, and is always in danger of losing the A’s. All three teams played in the Oakland Colosseum/Arena (Share a parking lot for those who don’t know). It’s same exit as Oakland airport which is a major fly out spot for the East Bay. A lot of potential for economic growth. Giants and Niners were in Candlestick Park for a long time (Cold, Windy, Far distance for most to travel to). Giants built a new park closer in to the city center of San Fran right off the Bay Bridge. Fans increased as did the local area businesses. Team spent their money on payroll and the team did well. Niners moved to Santa Clara for a stadium. Building on the frustration of not getting a new stadium, the Warriors follow suit and move to a new spot away from Oakland into San Fran. Oakland loses another business opportunity. I’m rambling a bit I know, but I’ve watched these cities and teams (not to forget the Kings in Sacramento) go through this a lot and it’s not an easy question to answer. |
