Revenues are up for many reasons, including very wealthy corporations who, regardless of numbers of viewers, are willing to pour a ton of money into the NFL for the social justice platform alone. But mainly bc last year 41 of the top 50 most watched TV events were NFL owned and operated! That’s not insignificant. Viewer population (aka product consumption) is something that defines the quality of a product, any product. Revenues can be astronomical even if a product isn’t even marketed and sold (consumed), it just means that the company who is advertising their idea is wealthy, extremely wealthy. And once again, US company’s are stupidly wealthy, at least the ones that advertise on an NFL product.

And the viewer numbers were an absolute apples to apples comparison. It wasn’t a weighted average of all the games in a season. That rating that Beast is discussing is Opening night 2020 NFL to Opening night 2019 viewers. It doesn’t get much more of a fair comparison. Who knows what the future ratings brings? We’re all just guessing on that one. What we DO know is that ratings from opening night last year to opening night this year was double digits lower. Not to mention the apparently very audible boo birds that even had players on the field tweeting “WTH” folks.

Lastly, nobody would be discussing your father had you not introduced the element into the conversation.

Sorry, gs1, but it isn't apples to apples. The first game last year had no competition from other televised sporting events. The 2019 opener was on FOX, the 2019 on NBC. The US Open was not on at the time in 2019. The semi-finals were on during the game last night. The NBA and NHL seasons were both long over and didn't have games on in the same time slot in 2019. Last night there were NBA, NHL and WNBA games in that time slot. Many fans of other sports move on to the NFL because their sport of choice has finished. That was the case in 2019. That definitely was not the case in 2020. Explain to me how that qualifies as apples to apples? Perhaps a Apple laptop to a lap full of applesauce?

Seriously, how is that a level statistical baseline for comparison? By the way, I did spend over 25 years as a senior business/data analyst so this is well within my realm of expertise.

Re: NFL TNF Ratings: 10 Year low

There WERE other TV shows on last year that were directly competing, equally if not more than the NBA, the NHL or lol, the WNBA. I care less what your personal experiences are/were, they mean nothing to me bc they are unverifiable, in all truthiness you could be lying just to try and advance an ideal you want propagated. I do not know you from Elmer Fudd, nor do you me. Neither of us should be afforded some level of expertise about anything.

It is a direct comparison bc it is opening night NFL 2020 to Opening night NFL 2019. And that’s just a fact. What’s going on in the world or on other channels is unimportant to me. They existed in 2019 equally as much as 2020. Full disclosure though, I haven’t seen a live start to end NHL, NBA, or WNBA game, well, ever in my 52 years of existence on this planet. So my bias is that I place no importance on them.

The fact that YOU place no importance on them is not relevant.

I'm right there with you on the importance personally of those other sports, but to a distinct subset of sports fans it does matter so the fact that those seasons or events had taken place and were over months earlier in 2019 has a very real and very concrete effect when measuring the data relationships between the opening day ratings of the 2019 and 2020 NFL seasons.

Sorry.

Oh, I can send you references on my work history if that will ease your concerns. LOL! Suffice to say that I spent those years with Arkla Gas (and it's many rebrandings) and the Willis Knighton Heath System. Happily retired now.
