Brees coming back?

Oh, and if true Guido called it.

Could be BS. Waiting.

Yeah I saw a wwl screen shot that said he was returning for another season but no direct links

Sorry, got this from a friend who is usually on top of this. LOL. From what 73Saint said apparently it was going around.

Nope. He has lost the eye of the tiger and he is truly well past his prime.

If he chose to come back he’d be a top 10 QB. We’d be a Wild Card team at minimum. The only question is would we have the health and team to go all the way.

Drew at 35% is better than anyone we have on the roster. Not to mention a cheap cap hit.

AsylumGuido 02-18-2021 06:06 PM

Re: Brees coming back?

Drew was dealing with a rotator cuff injury in his throwing shoulder. That didn't become known until after the season. I would not be surprised if he wanted to return to play another season with a healthy shoulder and real fans in the stands. If he had decided to retire already we would have known it by now.

What rotator cuff? He didn't have one when we signed him as a free agent back in '06...

He's got a re-visioned cuff that Doc Andrews made from tendons and striated muscle...

And it requires a tremendous effort of Brees and the physical therapy support staff to get it strong enough to compensate...

That is why his story is so amazing and why he deserved to be compensated accordingly...

And, no, I do not think he's coming back as is, but I do expect him to be a part of the Saints in a support role...

Why? Brees has already signed his contract for his next gig at NBC. While he will always be a New Orleans legend, the much more likely scenario is that he retires, moves the family back to San Diego full time, and moves on to his next career as a TV guy.

Not saying he's walking away from the commentary gig; but he loves football; he loves the game; he loves the comradery (even though his current locker room has some toxicity toward him)...

And he's proud of his legacy here and he wants to see it flourish; he will spend time here working, teaching QBs here; have no doubt he sees what a sh*t hole New Orleans has reclaimed for itself since H. Katrina...

But he wants to be a difference maker; his ego won't allow anything less; he won't be content just talking football on Sunday/Monday nights; he will recreate the rush of NFL play in his new world...

And don't be surprised to see him dip his toe into the political foray, but I suspect that will be more toxic than he's willing to put his family through that sh*tshow and will work more in the donor world...

They don't play for Drew. They play for the New Orleans Saints. If they have a problem with that they can carry their asses elsewhere.

Unfortunately this is correct...

I really hope he doesn't come back. He might have been injured, and he will be if he plays again. Drew will never be healthy for the last 10 games of the season. If I ranked QBs he'd be in the 15-20 range of current QBs.

Yes, Drew would start hot and look good, like he does most seasons. However, for the games that matter most he'll start falling apart. Can't throw the long ball, and towards the end of the season he couldn't throw accurately at all.

I hope I don't have to keep ragging on Drew, but it'll be another season to damage his legacy if he returns.

I am ready for Winston.... (Two years ago I would have thrown up at the thought)

Not necessarily - timing of the announcement may just be about Loomis' wiggling room with the cap as Feb 23rd is approaching and we'll see if Loomis designates anyone with the franchise tag...

Once we're into the new NFL calendar year, Mar 15 I believe, we'll probably have a more formal announcement with a post Jun 1 retirement designation...

Plus, I seriously doubt Drew would play for $1MIL/season - his current contractual number...

Wrong, it’s Drew who will be carrying his ass elsewhere.

As for him being a top 10 Qb if he comes back as some here have stated, I agree. For a hand full of games at least. His body can’t take it anymore and it’s obvious to anyone whose been watching the past few years. If I knew he could stay healthy hell yea I’d want him back but that’s not reality.
I’m on the Winston train now. Giving him a year while we figure out what to do about the future can’t hurt. There’s really not body else out there that makes sense ATM.
Even the local media agrees its best for the team if he retires.

Dude! How can you talk about Drew like that? He is a good humanitarian and has been our savior bringing us a Lombardi! I guess that you're one of the "what have you done for me lately" types. He has been the face of the franchise for over 15 years and has personally carried the team on his back until recently.

I hope that you don't disrespect everyone in your past who no longer makes your life better. Damn Son! That's just mean. :argue:

Or maybe because he's 42? All the great ones will decline.

Deion, Rice, Ewing, MJordan … father time remains undefeated.

Is everyone ignoring the fact that he was dealing with a rotator cuff injury through at least most of the season? You can be 24 years old and "not have it" under those circumstances.

Brees hasn't performed at a level to enable the Saints to win it all in the post season since 2017. He's tougher than a 2 dollar steak, a soldier but these type of injuries (especially a torn rotator) at his current age will be more difficult to tolerate each passing year.

I hope Brees retires for his own sake. He gave so much for the fans, team mates and the city of New Orleans. Healing properties of the body do not get better with age in a gladiator sport. Hopefully he listens to that second voice.

#9 has nothing left to prove …

But it's time.

But if he feels and the team agrees that he is the best bet to win it all again then why not? That second voice may only be in your head. His ONLY voice is the only one that matters, K. No doubt he has nothing left to prove. Why must proving something be a factor. If he still loves the game, feels he can be healthy enough to to play, and play at a high level then why not? By the way, those are what he has stated each of the last four off-seasons as deciding factors whether or not he returns. Having something to prove has never been a factor.

Edit: I needed to add ... HIS OWN SAKE? What does "his own sake" mean?

Did you not see the list of items he played through in 2021? Torn rotator, collapsed lungs, broken ribs, torn fascia in his foot etc.

Not sure if you caught Brees in some of those post game interviews but has said there are a lot of things going on in his body. His overall quality of life AFTER football and health for his family now becomes paramount.

The game is a grind. He's left it all on the field. I will never question Brees heart & love of the game but I hope he calls it a career & gets his body back to 100% & enjoy Brittany and those young kids.

Of course I saw every reference to what he was going through. But none of it would be something that would threaten his enjoyment of life moving forward. If he feels like he is capable and he wants to play, then why should any of us have an issue with that? I'll guarantee you he is in better physical condition that 95% of us at the same age with everything he's been through.

I have a feeling it is your wish for you rather than your wish for him that he calls it a career. Come on, K, call it like it is. You WANT him gone. It has nothing to do with his "quality of life" that concerns you.

Not necessarily
He won't retire officially until June 1st so the cap is spread and the way Goodell hates the Saints he will probably try and scream them on cap tampering or some drivel if he announced it now and then retired later. Even if its been done before

You can announce intention to retire today and it can still be official post June 1st when the papers are filed. That's the way it works.

After what I've seen from Goddell and the contract restructure I wouldn't rely on rules. He's likely giving himself time but with Payton so vocal on Winston I don't see him being back
