Nobody has mentioned the possibility that Sean Payton retired from the NFL to take the MCAT, apply to medical schools, and become a doctor. If Sean can correctly predict that a soon 32 year old Taysom Hill who has been injured in every season as a full time college or pro starter and most seasons as a part timer and is coming off a lisfranc injury and multi-week concussion and primarily has plus skills as a physical running threat can become a productive long term starting QB in this league, Sean should strongly consider becoming a medical doctor. If he is not considering this, he should count his blessings that Drews shoulder held up when Drew was already a pro bowl level QB and not fall into the trap of beginners luck in gambling and force that addiction on our franchise because he rolled a few sevens his first time at the craps table. Drew Brees had one injury and a safe style of play and was 27 and already quite proven when he joined the Saints. Taysom Hill will be 32 next season, has a long history of injuries, has only a handful of starts, and relies extensively on a risky style of play. Sean ain’t a medical doctor. His judgement on the most important question about Hill is guided only by the gamblers phenomenon of beginners luck.

Another possibility nobody has mentioned is that Sean knew he would retire soon and did not want to go through a rebuild to free up cap and picks to find a Brees successor, so to convince management to focus 100% on winning now, he had to sell the idea that an in house successor was in place even if it was not real. Hill as a starting QB could have been a bluff all the time. Whenever there was an alternative in Winston or even Semian at times we took the alternative. But the bluff may have been important to avoid a rebuild.

Quarterbacks with Taysom Hill’s style of play do not play to 40 years old. Cam Newton is like a year older than Taysom Hill.

Jimmy Garapollo got a big streak of wins in his early starts too, when you win 9-0 it sometimes has more to do with the defense.

I was not talking about Hills beginners luck though. I think Sean Paytons entire career as a coach has at once benefitted and suffered from Drew Brees amazing recovery from a devistating shoulder injury. On the one hand, Payton got a hall of fame qb for no draft capital on an initially cheap contract and made a great record. On the other hand part of this was pure luck, and Drew Brees could just as easily have struggled to recover and become another Chad Pennington, RG3, Andrew Luck, Dante Culpepper, etc. But Payton got lucky on Drews recovery and then he and Loomis bet compulsively on injury prone and injured free agents and draft picks the rest of Paytons tenure, which led to like 15 years of seasons hampered by recurring injuries across the roster and laments that we will always be unbeatable next year because the injury bug cant strike again. Guys like Peat, Hill, Analzone, and Cameron Meredith were the cost of our luck with Brees. I hope in the future we realize that some players do have histories that suggest higher propensity for injury than average and that its ok to gamble on a few of those players but when you gamble on two many of them you can never have a stable roster and actually start to break down and injury your more durable players due to the chaos created by constantly have to shift roles and assignments due to injuries.
