Saints 2022 Cap Restructure Potential

The Saints are currently setting at about $79 million over the projected 2022 cap. The team should begin making moves to alleviate that deficit soon.

Here is a table on Over the Cap that's shows the cap space of each team and the Restructure Potential of each team. It includes both Simple and Maximum Restructures.

From the above link:

A simple restructure converts payments into prorated signing bonuses within the confines of the remainder of the contract. Teams typically have the ability to unilaterally execute simple restructures without any action necessary from the player.

A maximum restructure increases the amount of cap space via conversion into prorated signing bonuses by either extending the contract or by adding void years to a contract, years that do not extend the contract but are only used as placeholders for the proration. Maximum restructures are typically considered a renegotiation of the contract that requires the player's consent to execute.

The Saints currently have $101,417,471 in simple restructure available which would give them about $21.6 million in available cap space. I follow these restructures every year and am planning on posting them here as I see them happen.

So if the cap does not increase every year, at some point they run out of wiggle room.

Correct. But, that has happened just one time in the history of the cap and was able to be absorbed. The new broadcast contracts guarantee the cap will continue to grow at an even faster pace through the 2033 season. Of course, another pandemic could happen, I suppose. More and more clubs are starting to structure contracts, especially the big ones, to take advantage of the current versus future value concept that the Saints' Loomis and Khai Harley have been using for years.

Check out the roster bonuses built into Mahomes' contract. He has $315.5 million in remaining roster bonuses built into it that can automatically be converted annually into signing bonuses and prorated into future periods through the 2032 season. It's not a coincidence that this corresponds to the term of the new broadcast contracts and projected cap explosion:

New facts won't stop the narrative but it's nice to see some willing to explain we're more than capable of fielding a top flight team next season.

The problem is that the narrative is being perpetrated by a media that does not understand the accounting principles behind this relatively new strategy. Nick Underhill is one that appears to "get it". I posted an interview with Khai Hartley recently where he mentioned their use of GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles) when dealing with the CBA and cap. It is a sound methodology. While a background in accounting makes it easier to understand, it isn't necessary.

What about the narrative that states - and I'm quoting YOU here little speedo:

"The cap doesn't matter"

How many players might we have kept if, in fact, the cap didn't matter. Perhaps you can enlighten the group on these 'accounting principles'?

Oh and by the way, there's only on "C" in 'necessary'.

I've seen you "explain" these 'accounting principles' here before by directly copying and pasting from wikipedia and passing it off as your own words. Hard pass on anything you have to say on the subject. You don't know jack little man.

But perhaps you can help with accountability? Now that's a good place to start. Be accountable for harassing others here, be accountable for race-baiting, being a fan boy, playing the victim, trying to divide the board, refusing to check your ego, etc, etc.

You know...your NPD. Account for that? If you need any help, DO reach out.

I do. You can selectively view an individual post by someone on your ignore list and I was giving him the possible credit for actually posting something of value. It was obviously unwarranted. It was the same foolishness that others tell me he posts constantly.

Lots of 'value' in my posts, especially to those who have been attacked by you. You should just admit you can't stand to miss out on what I'm saying. That's NPD little man.

Let me give you a hint: Until you make a public apology and acknowledge your trolling, race baiting and victim mentality you can fully expect it to continue. No need to take a peek. LMAO

So why would a guy with a BS in accounting copy and paste accounting principles from wikipedia?

Yes, you went back to school for it. I know, because you've broadcast that here many times - and not a single person cares. You should have studied Psych. Even an 098 might have helped you understand your own disorder (NPD).

Twitter makes you even more stupid.

As an accountant why can't you simply state it without twitter? You have 4 years at LSU - so clearly you're qualified to run an NFL teams cap, eh? My guess is you kept somebody's books if that. Lots of people do that without a degree - common sense and all that stuff. And yet you need twitter to make your point, and it still isn't valid.

It looks like we'll be able to re-sign all of our free agents, sign a dozen more outside free agent, trade for three or four starters, bring in an elite QB, and draft seven starters this year. What is this salary cap you speak of? Loomis obviously doesn't believe in it either. :p

LOL! Not quite, but it certainly isn't anywhere near as bleak as last season with the cap was going down instead of taking a big jump like this year.

According to you it doesn't matter if it goes up or down - because "the cap doesn't matter", eh?

I'm starting to understand why you don't work in a financial capacity for an NFL team.

With the staffing now looking to be mostly in place maybe we can finally get started working on that cap deficit. I believe the first restructure last year occurred on February 13th, so we have a lot of catching up to do before the end of the league year on March 16th. That's when the teams are supposed to be cap compliant.

Everyone here acknowledges speedo's history - even those he hasn't attacked - particularly those he HAS attacked, and that's a decent number.

All we need - and I do mean ALL we need - is for speedo to acknowledge his behavior and pledge to end it. That's it, then it's over. He is far beyond a 'butthole', although that certainly does fit. He's getting precisely and exactly what he has given to countless members here. He's a troll and a race baiter. A PM apology would be fine. With all the hell that has broke loose he still won't do it. Still waiting...

Looking at individual contract terms for players it looks like the Saints have until March 18th to convert 2022 base salaries to signing bonus proration and until March 20th to convert roster bonuses to signing bonus proration.

Last year the first of ten restructures by the Saints occurred on February 5th and the last was March 17th, just prior to base salaries and roster bonuses hitting the 2021 books.
