Saints 2022 Cap Restructure Potential

The Saints are currently setting at about $79 million over the projected 2022 cap. The team should begin making moves to alleviate that deficit soon.

Here is a table on Over the Cap that's shows the cap space of each team and the Restructure Potential of each team. It includes both Simple and Maximum Restructures.

From the above link:

A simple restructure converts payments into prorated signing bonuses within the confines of the remainder of the contract. Teams typically have the ability to unilaterally execute simple restructures without any action necessary from the player.

A maximum restructure increases the amount of cap space via conversion into prorated signing bonuses by either extending the contract or by adding void years to a contract, years that do not extend the contract but are only used as placeholders for the proration. Maximum restructures are typically considered a renegotiation of the contract that requires the player's consent to execute.

The Saints currently have $101,417,471 in simple restructure available which would give them about $21.6 million in available cap space. I follow these restructures every year and am planning on posting them here as I see them happen.

So if the cap does not increase every year, at some point they run out of wiggle room.

Correct. But, that has happened just one time in the history of the cap and was able to be absorbed. The new broadcast contracts guarantee the cap will continue to grow at an even faster pace through the 2033 season. Of course, another pandemic could happen, I suppose. More and more clubs are starting to structure contracts, especially the big ones, to take advantage of the current versus future value concept that the Saints' Loomis and Khai Harley have been using for years.

Check out the roster bonuses built into Mahomes' contract. He has $315.5 million in remaining roster bonuses built into it that can automatically be converted annually into signing bonuses and prorated into future periods through the 2032 season. It's not a coincidence that this corresponds to the term of the new broadcast contracts and projected cap explosion:

New facts won't stop the narrative but it's nice to see some willing to explain we're more than capable of fielding a top flight team next season.

The problem is that the narrative is being perpetrated by a media that does not understand the accounting principles behind this relatively new strategy. Nick Underhill is one that appears to "get it". I posted an interview with Khai Hartley recently where he mentioned their use of GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles) when dealing with the CBA and cap. It is a sound methodology. While a background in accounting makes it easier to understand, it isn't necessary.

What about the narrative that states - and I'm quoting YOU here little speedo:

"The cap doesn't matter"

How many players might we have kept if, in fact, the cap didn't matter. Perhaps you can enlighten the group on these 'accounting principles'?

Oh and by the way, there's only on "C" in 'necessary'.
