Why did Saints decline the chance to get compensation for Sean Payton from the Dolphins?
The news, as broken on Monday’s PFT Live, that the Dolphins had planned to pursue Sean Payton to coach the team and Tom Brady to play quarterback, entails many layers and levels. Let’s focus, for now, on the wrinkle that the Dolphins sought permission from the Saints to speak to Payton, and that the Saints declined.
First, the Dolphins likely didn’t make that request as a shot in the dark, without any knowledge as to whether Payton would have been interested in taking the job. These things have a way of working out unofficially and behind the scenes, as they did when Payton nearly left the Saints to become coach of the Cowboys in 2019, the details of which are set forth in Playmakers. Three years ago, the unrelated-but-related effort by Pelicans forward Anthony Davis to leave town killed the Payton-to-Dallas deal. This year, even after Payton left the Saints, something kept New Orleans from letting the process play out. More here. | |

Just about every off-season, the Miami Dolphins are front/center with talk of hiring a new HC and drafting a "franchise" QB.
Owner Ross and his team are just a mess. |

Lotta nothing that resembles facts or proof on Florio's part. Bah!

“First, the Dolphins likely didn’t make that request as a shot in the dark, without any knowledge as to whether Payton would have been interested in taking the job.”
So their first point is a complete guess on their part? I’m pretty certain it went like this: Loomis: Hey Sean, I know you want to retire but the Dolphins have a trade offer on the table for you. Are you interested? Payton: Nah. |

Was the compensation not enough?
Just saying, it's Loomis' job to listen to offers. Even if it's someone they don't want to lose, you have to listen to an offer. |

Re: Why did Saints decline the chance to get compensation for Sean Payton from the Dolphins?
The whole article by Florio is click bait to plug his book which he mentions and links in the article as the single source for scoop on Payton to Dallas in 2019. Florio is a hack and we are giving him air time.
Outside of that there are three perspectives. Sean Payton - Sean is tired of the league not the Saints. He left the competition committee earlier citing not being on the same page. Why would he want to go coach Brady? He beat him twice in 2021 and regardless of the leagues effort to name Tom Brady as the GOAT, Sean Payton doesn’t buy into it and it’s likely he wouldn’t be interested just due to his relationship with Drew. Benson/Loomis - They hold Sean’s contract and all things considered it’s probably a ‘he coaches here or not at all’ stance. That explains not hearing an offer and the fact that coaches contracts are outside of the cap makes it less relevant than if it were an offer for a player. Miami - Who gives a ***k about Miami’s perspective. Seriously, they should quit before they are known for missing out on Brees and Payton. Sean’s gone… let him go. |

If Sean doesn't want to coach next year the Dolphins could have offered ten first round draft picks and all their players. Loomis can't make Payton want to coach again when what he needs is time to rest after his long tenure with the Saints working night and day.
Last year was a rough one for the Saints and I'm sure it wore Sean Payton down! He's only human after all. While I'm at it I'll just say that I'm glad Sean Payton built the Saints into a team that has the feel of a dynasty. |
