Marcus Davenport
As this is his last year, do you sign him? How do you handle or not handle his new contract? Do the Saints really have a choice?
|
Re: Marcus Davenport
Wasn't impressed in a contract year.
He's averaged 12 games played per season. Do you think he's worth $20MM per year? That's what his market is. |

Re: Marcus Davenport
Try out the market and see what we can get for him. But I wouldn't let him go on that last year. He's going to have to have a prove it season to get top dollar on the Saints, or anywhere else.

Re: Marcus Davenport
If he leaves we're paying him two more seasons I think

That is an illustration of how the cap has been managed. If we pay him, his number increases. So, is it worth it? |
Re: Marcus Davenport
The fact they let players walk with more productivity than Davenport makes me say they shouldn't keep him, but they likely will anyway.

Re: Marcus Davenport
I know some people have defended Loomis and his 'kick the can' method of cap management, but that's the problem with stealing from Peter to pay Paul...
Sooner or later, you end up with a sore Peter! |
Re: Marcus Davenport
I would offer him $4.5-6mil/yr. Thats what his production and availability is worth. If he gets a lot more I hope and pray its a division rival who is the sucker. Andrus Peat 2.0 on defense.

Cut bait
Only plays 1/2 to 3/4 of games each year When he's "healthy" rarely lives up to the hype Cost 2 no.1 picks, dudes stealing money |
Re: Marcus Davenport
Hmm.
I'd bring MD back for 2023. His sack totals aren't higher, but among other things, his pressure rate is on par with 2021. The coverage and safety play were below average compared to a year ago. The former has gotten better in recent weeks, but losing Latt has hurt a lot, and I believe that's why the number of defensive line sacks has decreased. It would be less expensive (see post #5) to bring him back for a year. |

Re: Marcus Davenport
I'd like to put the franchise tag on Marcus Davenport for 2023. Maybe he'll have a healthy year where he produces and finally lives up to his potential. Otherwise, we can let him walk and get the compensatory pick. I believe that that is where he gives us our most value. I really thought we were going to start playing the compensatory game now but it looks like we're just going to keep extending these guys and plunging into further cap hell.

We let Hendrickson walk and kept Davenport, when Hendrickson was easily the better player. What a waste. |

Seems like we work so hard to unearth these late round gems then allow them to walk too soon. |
Re: Marcus Davenport
Man, what can I say? All of this negative is accurate.

Speaking of DEs, Payton Turner has been a huge disappointment in New Orleans.

Re: Marcus Davenport
Davenport has not looked in game shape all season. Can’t remember if it was Darnold or the RB that got the edge on Marcus. The man looks Fat and Slow.
Cam was making Darnold run parallel to the line all game, then throwing incompletions out of bounds. |

Re: Marcus Davenport
Saints whining because they don't have a double digit sack leader boo-hoo. They were 5th in sacks somethings working. Pass coverage and interior dline play took the biggest hit which all effect the pass rush. Just like all ints aren't players making a play on the ball all sacks aren't a guy just dominating their man in front of them. But let you guys tell it he did nothing. Same guys screaming Payton needs to leave same guys screamed to not resign Marcus Williams same guys fell in love with Adebo after that avg rookie season. Same guys who are ok with trading up for olave and he drops critical passes. Same guys screaming trade AK Demario and Cam. Marcus Davenport injuries have held him back no question the guy can play though if not wi5h the Saints someone else will sign him. Wish him the best. Trey Hendrickson can't stop the run that's why they didn't pay him he's a 3 down DE who CANT maintain the edge and couldn't get one of those lovely sacks against James Hurst...not impressed

Re: Marcus Davenport
I want to like Davenport. He is an absolute physical freak but his production doesn't mirror that. If we were to resign him it should be for a contrac matching his production not his potential because that is something we might never see.
He is however a guy that could easily go to another team, stay healthy and have 17 sacks in a year. That is the gamble here. |
Re: Marcus Davenport
I was so impressed with Marcus Davenport's physicality that I told everyone we would forget about the two number one draft picks. Well, I was wrong and I'm eating crow. I'd rather have roasted falcon.

Still scratching my head how they kept Davenport and let Hendrickson walk...

Re: Marcus Davenport
I would low ball Davenport on a contract and add incentives. He knows he hasn't set the world on fire

The fact that Carl Granderson consistently outperforms Davenport, just like Hendrickson did, speaks volumes.
