this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; He “retired “ for a year. But why not come home so to speak. Nothing but open arms would be welcoming him back. And he knows that. So my question is, why doesn’t he want to come back?...

Why doesn’t Payton want to come back to the Saints?

Re: Why doesn’t Payton want to come back to the Saints?
Because he was part of the team that left the roster in a mess, constantly needing to restructure injured/aging players to get under the cap. Starting the year 50ml plus in the hole isn't exactly a great starting point.
He was part of the brains that neglected QB successor for years, and left the team needing to give away the 2023 number 1(11th) pick to make sure they got a top WR the year before. Look at the draft picks from 2012 onwards, outside of 2017 is hardly a roaring success. He was a major part of overspending and keeping the band together and as far as i'm concerned as soon at them chickens came home to roost he jumped ship and wanted nothing to do with trying to rebuild the team. One tough year after he loses his HOF QB and thats it, he jacks it all in. Had he just gone the year before we actually had a good HC and DC in house, he him staying on when it was obviously on his mind to walk meant the team got left with Allen and lost Campbell and Glenn Jump ship, sit out a year and waiting to walk into a good set up with a QB in place Im actually amazed people would want him back. |
"Two receivers to the left, Garcon to the right. Manning in the shotgun, puts Collie in motion. Looks in his direction...it's picked off! It's picked off! It's Tracy Porter again! He's runnin' free! He's gonna go all the way!

Re: Why doesn’t Payton want to come back to the Saints?
Yes exactly.
But this is not a unique flaw. The Rams have done the same and now Sean McVay is suddenly burnt out and has an interest in broadcasting. Watch him retire, wait a year, and take the Chargers job. Tom Brady saw the Patriots depleted, over the cap and with no other weapons on offense, so he went to Tampa who were a mile under the cap with lots of young high draft picks, and he took advantage. Harbaugh had some recruiting violations that any college coach can get, so he bails back to the pros. It might work out, because Pete Carroll did the same and won a superbowl. I think Payton is a good coach but will not suceed long term as his own GM. He needs a good forward looking patient GM but has too much ego to share power with one. |

He needs to come back with an empty garbage truck.

16 years with the same franchise.
The man is human. New chapters. New challenges. New perspectives. All motivating factors. I'm glad we had him as long as we did. |

My guess is his new old lady does not want to reside in NOLA anymore.
We need to get all the picks we can get for his trade. Texans just became numero uno as they just fired their coach and they have the draft capital. | |

I think that if there are 2 or more franchises SP is willing to join then, yes there certainly should be an element to that for New Orleans. I hope it happens in Houston! |

Re: Why doesn’t Payton want to come back to the Saints?
Players are probably ready for a new chapter, Coach P is probably ready for a new chapter. Probably largest sector of people wanting to get the band back together are the fans, and we really don't know 10% of what we think we do. New start for everyone at this point is the only logical option.
