So san Francisco trades its 1st round pick in 2023 to Miami to trade up and select Lance, that pick becomes 29, that pick is then traded to Denver for Chubb since Miami had to forfeit its original pick, and now Denver has traded that pick to the saints.
Chit, that pick has been passed around and traveled ! |

Now he needs to just not screw up and not trade away our 2024 picks to make some splash this year.
I did not think we should take some late 2nd rounder or something because 'it's better than nothing' but I also did not think we were likely to get some blockbuster top 5 pick or multiple 1st rounders. This is reality. This is what Payton was worth. And no, the Broncos were not going to wait until 2025 to execute this deal to save on picks. They paid billions for the team. They want to win now. They paid up the nose for Russell Wilson, they want to see if he can be the answer with better coaching now. And I was right in saying Harbaugh could affect the market for Payton. It seems like Denver took one last shot at Harbaugh for free before they paid for Payton, given the similar products. Harbaugh bowing out of consideration probably helped us get value for Payton. Had Harbaugh made himself available its likely the Broncos would have either given him a similar deal and saved themselves picks, or used his availability as leverage to drop our asking price, if the Panthers etc did not take him off the market first. It never made a ton of sense for anyone to give us Jon Gruden type trade value. Sean Payton and Jon Gruden were both born in 1963. They are essentially the same age. Jon Gruden in 2002 and Sean Payton in 2022 are not the same value. Tampa traded for a coach who, if it all worked out, could have been a legend for their team for decades. With Payton, Denver is trading for a coach who has 5-10 years left and might be the next Andy Reid or Dick Vermeil or might be the next Seahawks Holmgren or Saints Ditka. This was a fair enough deal. We were never getting the picks to draft CJ Stroud or Bryce Young just because someone on a message board saw him in a game and had the unique special thought that he liked him for a pro QB. The one puzzling thing is that Payton is not walking into a much better situation than he left in New Orleans, and perhaps may be walking into a worse one. They have even less draft picks. Wilson's contract could easily become an albatross, and it will be very costly to get out of it anytime soon. The Broncos do have a lot more cap space than the Saints in 2023 and going forward through 2025 but the Wilson deal and the lack of draft picks could be an issue still. I think the Broncos 2023 2nd rounder could be a high pick in the 33-48 range. Sean is a great coach but if Russ is cooked things could really hit the fan for the Broncos in 2023. Sean's teams don't have an amazing record on defense and great defenses one season do not always stay great the next. So I am not sure the Broncos can could on their defense to carry them in 2023. Meanwhile maybe Sean can fix Russ but maybe nobody can, and if nobody can fix Russ, his leadership of the team could unravel further in 2023 and make 2022 look good. So, I could definitely see a scenario where the Broncos are in the range of a .500 team to one of the worst teams in the league. I have trouble seeing them winning their division or anything like that. |

Mayor…? Surely you underestimate the vision of the divine one? Looks like an active thread until you realize the Narcissist is 25 of the 65 comments. I’m pretty done here, he’s run off too many good people and it’s impossible to have a conversation. It is what it is. |

There’s a stark difference in saying not feeling we got maximum value and getting hosed. You do the comprehension.

Re: Payton goes to the Broncos!
Once again, I agree, shawnky. Of course I wanted more. Who wouldn't as a Saints fan. But the only ones thinking we might get more was a delusional subset of Saints fans looking at that screw job by the Raiders as some sort of template.

Re: Payton goes to the Broncos!
Sounds about right.
Sean Payton trade grades Saints: A New Orleans coming away with a first-round pick in the upcoming 2023 NFL Draft AND a 2024 second-round pick for its best head coach in team history is an absolute steal. Payton retired/resigned as the Saints' head coach following the 2021 season after looking around the room and realizing life in New Orleans wasn't as rosy without Drew Brees. Normally, a team trying to trade a disgruntled star player under contract leads to a lower return than the team parting with the star would've hoped. Yet the Saints were able to coerce the Broncos into parting with two top-round picks anyways because of their desperation. Phenomenal job by Saints general manager Mickey Loomis. New Orleans will now be able to participate in the first round of the upcoming draft after it traded away its own pick to the Philadelphia Eagles a year ago. This trade doesn't completely fix that mistake since this pick will be at the back end of the first round instead of the top 10 like their own pick would have been, but Loomis got within the ballpark of what he could have hoped for when parting with someone who no longer wanted to be a part of the franchise despite not having a crazy amount of leverage. |
