It was brought up that if they had that ability they'd be a starter elsewhere. That doesn't mean there aren't some decent backups out there, but the vast majority are a huge step down from those 1st stringers they play behind.

This came from discussions of the shoddy performances in the games this week.
I thought that last year the Cowboys drafted a left tackle in the 1st round even though they had a high caliber starter. Then the started got a big injury but luckily they had the 1st rounder to fill in. I am not saying that any teams have 8 starting caliber oline, but I am not sure we can afford for 1 starter to go down, and I worry we have a starter who is at the level of many backups in the league in Peat. Also there is a difference between the dropoff from the starter to a 4th rounder vs a starter to an undrafted player or journeyman bust. Some teams definitely have more depth on oline than we do. Also, some teams have a healthier starting 5 than we do because when one of their starting 5 became very unreliable they cut him, rather than signing him to a 5 year extension to play tricks on the salary cap.

Also, I hope Foskey made the flight home. Airports can be crowded, lots of people to get around and limited time to do it.

Last preseason game should be good for some players.

Some have flashed a little. Let's see them start the game against better quality competition with whatever version of 1st stringers each team plays with to begin the game.

Niko Lalos
Peyton Turner
Jaylon Smith
Alontae Taylor / Lonnie Johnson Jr / Jordan Howden

Jake Haener
Jontre Kirklin / Shaq Davis
Storm Norton / Nick Salvaderi / Max Garcia

... among others.

I hope Haener gets the start (last pre-season game) @ QB, to be honest.

He's been composed & sharp thus far.

Hadn't been mentioned much but my guy Blake Gilikin needs to bring it. A lot of shank punts thus far. Not very consistent.

OMG! Now that's some funny stuff right there. Also, I don't necessarily disagree with the rest of your statement.

Re: 2023 New Orleans Saints: Training Camp

The Saints coaches really like Kirkwood. They like him so much that he didn’t even play in Sunday’s second preseason game against the Chargers. He got the same treatment as most of the offensive starters, which tells you all you need to know. He’s not fighting for a position on this team, because the Saints have seen enough and know what he brings. His first stint with the Saints was in the 2018 and ’19 seasons. After two years in Carolina, he returned to New Orleans last season. So he’s been in the offense longer than most in the room, which bodes well for him. That touchdown from Derek Carr in the preseason opener against the Chiefs didn’t hurt either.

Interesting take (not fighting for a position) on Kirkwood ^^.

But then again, I don't see him in practice 24/7 like the coaches. More importantly, availability is paramount.
