I like the cut of Smoke's jib. Hedley too. I hope that they both play for the Saints this year.

We are scary thin at LB depth. I wonder what the plan is?

Jaylon Smith will be back.

- Dennis values SPECIAL TEAMS more than we'll ever know.
- Roby is talented, however wasn't making enough plays @ practice.
- They are betting on Taylor to get up to speed in the slot (long term).
- Jaylon Smith is your #3, however HE'S never played on special teams (see #1) ... no role as a special teamer ATM. But clearly your #3 LB
- Triplett is confident Shaq will return to the practice squad
- Oline depth is still scary (exact words from Nick)
- Don't be surprised to see Dougie M look for a back up T/G elsewhere
- With all of the MT "injury" talk, is there concern that Shaheed won't be 100% by start of game #1?
- The Austrialian (equally inconsistent) won the punting job over my guy Blake G ... but for how long? Maybe still a phone call away?
- Saints chose YOUTH & TRUST on FG kicking over the experienced vet (Lutz)
- Best option on kick off returns? Shaheed, Ugo, Taysom or Alontae (emergency returner if needed)

Goes back to an earlier post of mine. Special teams is CRITICAL to a teams success or failure.

We are getting close. Can't wait :bng:

Mark my words, going with Grupe will be our undoing

Rookie kickers make me nervous too but from what I've been reading, the young kid is automatic from 45 yards in. We're about to find out.

We're younger for sure. I still don't understand why we didn't trade Roby. Maybe we have a hand shake deal with him to return tomorrow after 3Q goes to IR.

There probably weren't the claimed trade partners out there. That might have been his agent making crap up.

And it will be Jaylon Smith who will be coming back when Tre'Quan and/or Landon Young go on IR.

That's only if he's still available.

I hope we get to see him. If so that means Carolina is screwed with their offensive depth.

The TE room is pretty well stacked.

I’m just a couch GM/HC and scout but I never understood the fascination with Krull.

Bad footwork, can’t catch & spotty route running.
He better work with the jugs machine up in Denver.

Payton won’t tolerate all of the drops.

Do you mean like how Peyton developed Trautman, or Mack, and Peyton developed Fleener? I don’t get your point Map?

PAYTON....spelling for that quido person... is a much better coach than Allen. :beatnik:

Krull may just do better with the Broncos.

Roby is 31 and not a starter. Team may feel his better producing years are behind him. His trade value may not be much.

We saved at least $3.5M by releasing him. $5.5M if you count reachable incentives. There is that.

And trade value was obviously zero since no one actually went for it.

LD Bell (Dennis Allen) still has a ton to prove as Head Coach however when it comes to his defensive secondary moves … I 100% trust his judgment and evaluation process on players.

But again, I'm just a couch GM/HC and scout :dunce:.

Not to mention you can't trade a player unless you actually have a team honestly willing to trade for that player. If a team was willing to fork over a 2025 conditional 7th the Saints would have jumped on it.

Like I have always said, we as fans have no clue what goes on inside locker rooms, meeting rooms, and in practices. And most of what we see on the field we is without understanding of what was supposed to happen and who was supposed to do what.

In other words, we don't know crap. LOL!

Re: Trades & Cuts

Nick Kroll was not impressive. They fed him the ball but he can't catch half the time. If we want someone with speed to get open who is not so good at catching we already are massively overpaying for that with Taysom Hill who we may not have room under the salary cap to cut until he is 40. Maybe Peyton will try Kroll in the wildcat and pay him $15 million a year then when that fails announce he is rededicated to TE then when he still sucks as a TE bring Julius Thomas out of retirement to make Broncos fans forget to complain about why Nick Kroll is being paid $15 million a year to be a TE who can't catch. Kroll and Hill were both UDFA.

Payton is not good at developing TE's. The only good TE in Payton's time was Jimmy Graham. Maybe Jimmy Graham is good at developing TE's. The number of garbage TE's we had over time is staggering. Other than Graham, we seemed to look for TE's who could have big drops or fumbles at critical times with the likes of Fleener, Cook, and Trout Man.

Roby was the 3rd highest paid player on our roster in base salary. It is lucky we did not restructure his contract this year and guarantee basically all of it. Since we didn't restructure, we were able to cut an aging non starter and save money on our salary cap, an advanced salary cap management technique exploited by many of our rivals. If needed we can bring in Roby or another vet journeyman for vet minimum salary.

Overall we seem to have done well with the cuts. Hopefully we didn't get too cute putting Smith on our practice squad and don't lose him like Murray last year. We should look at other teams practice squads for oline help.

I wonder if Shaheed is going on IR. We tend to be tight lipped with injury. Davis could get an audition, though Shaheed has shown a lot and missing him would hurt us, if he is healthy.

Our official depth chart shows Peat and Hurst as co-starters at LG. Is that normal? At TE or RB or something I could kind of get it, since you could use different sets or vary with downs, but at LG it seems weird. Is Hurst our 3rd down LG and Peat our short yardage LG???? Or is this just a cop out and Peat is a backup who we don't want to admit to overpaying?

Jimmy Graham Stats By Team:

Saints: Receptions 386 Yards 4,562 Yards Per Catch 12.3 TD 51
Seahawks: Receptions 170 Yards 2,048 Yards Per Catch 12.0 TD 18
Packers: Receptions 93 Yards 1,083 Yards Per Catch 11.6 TD 5
Bears: Receptions 64 Yards 623 Yards Per Catch 9.7 TD 11

True, Payton has a "Thing" for TE'S and Kickers Remember before John Harbaugh tipped him off to Lutz the kicker was Kai Forbath!
Trivia: Grupe is the second ND Kicker the Saints have had, John Carney was the other. Payton cut him his second year and traded for the Dolphins Olindo Mare and promptly had the worst season of his career going 10 - 17 58.8%

So true iceshack. I'm only betting on my Saints this year though.
