Observations from the Saints win vs Titans

1 Attachment(s)
It's a win... that shouldn't even been that close. The refs did a commendable job of trying to screw the Saints. Defense is legit... and why DC4 will prosper here as a Saints QB .

Overall a valiant effort. Games are hard enough to win. It shows good character to be able to overcome the challenges .

On to the next victim next week. Let's enjoy this , Who Dats! We have the best record in the league, even better than the reigning champions.

Re: Observations from the Saints win vs Titana

O line has to get better, number 1.

Proud that our guys battled. Carr and Shaheed made up for their own mistakes with big time plays.

Defense, what can I say.

Tannehill was perplexed out there. They made Henry a complete non factor, other than a few runs here and there.

Granderson is a beast, how Marcus Davenport took playing time from him I'll never know.

Still a lot of work to do on offense but a win is a win. Kudos to the defense. I was very happy with Grupe. We have a LOT of potential on offense and I hope we can continue to grow from here.

Boy did the Titans come into this game with a bad game plan.

O-line and running game need work. Happy with everything else. Carr is our guy, been saying it.

Tannehill is below average. If the Titans actually sport a better QB, maybe they pull this one out .

Good - bad - and ugly

GOOD

1) DEFENSE
2) Carr - not superstar play, but played well - far more positive than negative plays.

BAD

1) Have to run the ball better
2) O-line has to play better

UGLY

1) NFL officiating still sucks

Re: Observations from the Saints win vs Titana

IF the Titans would have ran the ball with Henry 25 times we would have probably lost. That being said, their coaches were stuck on stupid today.

Tannehil missed 2 (TWO) easy TD's. We got away with one today.

I think they tried later, but the Saints D adjusted .

Re: Observations from the Saints win vs Titans

If you look at our division after todays results I think its a 3 way race for the lead. We came in the favorites but slugged out an ugly win against a bad team. Bucs came in the underdogs but were able to beat the Vikings who many see as the best team in a better division, and their QB played clean. The Falcons had the most dominating win but against the Panthers who may also be a bad team. We can't take anything for granted. I don't think we are competing against powder puffs here.

Re: Observations from the Saints win vs Titans

I never expected this game to be a cake walk.

Titans are legit on the Dline and on special teams.

Saints had struggles on O (specifically oline/ Penning) but Carr made key,
critical throws when it mattered most.

NFL refs are what they are but you still have to clean up those penalties.

We were the closers today. A win is a win.

Re: Observations from the Saints win vs Titans

Our defense looked a lot better than our offense. I wonder if John Gruden would be interested a Senior Assistant - Assistant Head Coach role the rest of the season.

Goodell doesn't want Gruden back in the NFL so if he is going to let the refs screw us and we can't do anything about it, we should do something he can't do anything about. What's the worst he could do? Have the refs screw us? Oh wait... thats already happening.

That's basically what Billicheat did with effing with RG. I wouldn't hate the idea.

Re: Observations from the Saints win vs Titans

Next week will be a good comparison for what or Oline is and what it’s not. The Titians have a top rated defensive line and it showed. Penning was the obvious weak link but there was little movement across the Oline in the run game till the last big run.

So next weeks matchup on Monday night might give another data point in season long evaluation rather than a rush to judgement.

Re: Observations from the Saints win vs Titans

Just listened to some of the post game and coach thinks that
Trevor Penning is “fine”.

You sure about that coach? Arden Key came in rather easily today.

Better get his technique and hand placement fixed quickly.

Otherwise you’re going to get Carr seriously injured.

WW_Who_Dat 09-10-2023 04:20 PM

Re: Observations from the Saints win vs Titans

Game 1 for Carr 23/33 305 yds 69.6 % completion … Yep DC took the team thru the door that the defense kept open for them for the win.

It's not how a player looks on the field, its where we drafted them. If we drafted them high they are great and will start throughout their contract because our front office never makes mistakes. If Penning continues to struggle we will declare him injured, put him on IR with zero notice, and blame the lost season on injuries while declaring 'it's like we have an extra 1st round pick in 2024' because he will be coming back.

Grupe 3 for 3 and extra point with 3 kickoffs thru the end zone no return.

Solid start to his career.

Will Lutz missed his first extra point with Denver.

I’ve observed that some people really get off on putting a negative spin on a Saints victory.

Boston Saint 09-10-2023 04:52 PM

Re: Observations from the Saints win vs Titans

Positives:
We created some Ints and won the TO battle

Grupe

Run D looks good and contained Henry for the most part

WRs looked good. We had contributions from our top 3 guys.

Carr kept his cool after the really bad Int

Negatives

Run blocking

We can’t figure out what the hell to do with Taysom Hill

Our kick and punt return teams either hold or fumble way too much.

Refs screw us as always.

Calling BS on this pseudo GM intellectual analysis. No fact or foundation.

Good win but our running game lacks the punch needed. We also need to find the end zone. Defense looked great as did Carr. Thomas looks like he’s healthy and motivated.

Agree with you. As Regards to the run game I’m Hoping that:

A) Tennessee is one of the better run Ds
B) O-Line will gel The more they play together
C) Having our best RB/elevator attendant (and Miller) return we will help
D) All of the above

Dude we had at least 2 major calls go our way. We can’t play the penalty card today.
Oline and running game problems go hand in hand so bench Penning and we are good.

We should cut Taysom Hill during the offseason. He will be 34 going into 2024. It will cost us money, but its the right thing to do. I know exactly what he is good for, having a few random monster games against bad run defenses. But we are paying Carr and Kamara to beat those teams anyway. Unfortunately we will probably restructure Hill after he generously takes a slight pay cut and defers money due to his late 30's age seasons.

Our Secondary looked amazing on the ball hawking. I would be glad to retain Allen as a defensive coordinator or secondary coach.

Carr is everything. He makes the amazing throw. He makes the 'is he blind' throw. He hits the receiver on the numbers, he hits the defender on the numbers. Sometimes he overthrows and sometimes he throws it into the ground. I would say his best attribute this game was avoiding a big mistake like a strip or throwing it up for grabs with all the pressure he saw. His one INT seemed like an unforced error, so he avoided forced errors. I am not sure Dalton or Winston could not have had a similar game, but at least it was not a distaster. To me, it looked like we have above average receivers and an average QB.

Yeah I agree on the first part.

As for Penning, this is career start #2 for him. His foot speed and lateral movements need work … coach him up !

I believe he”ll improve with film study & reps.

Re: Observations from the Saints win vs Titans

The whole 'Raiders stink' thing needs to be questioned. Today the Raiders beat a team of similar caliber to the Titans by 1 point with a decent but unspectacular performance by their QB. They played just about the same game as us. Carr played similar to his level of play with the Raiders. Edwards who we took the Raider stink off of didnt make the team. Moreau who we took the Raiders stink off of did not have a catch, not sure if he played. The Raiders took the Patriots and 49ers stink off Jakobi Meyers and Jimmy Garappalo and are winning their division. If we want to be dominant we need to look hard at our mistakes and correct them, not just take for granite we are some tiffany cadillac organization that can take the stink off any other uniform in the league. Also all that weight room work by Carr and Thomas, I am not sure what any of it accomplished. The football weighs 15 ounces. Work on watching tape instead.

Re: Observations from the Saints win vs Titans

Well, aside from his his bad showing I'm exited about most of the feedback about Penning's season debut. I still feel like we got great film that with the coaches will break down at every level and then they can focus and concentrate on coaching up Penning's weaknesses/techniques early . I'm glad that we didn't pull him early on for Hurst. That big boy has to set hips hips lower to get proper leverage and work on sliding rather than anchoring and committing early to the DE.

It's just our first regular season game. 1-0 baby!

Re: Observations from the Saints win vs Titans

We can’t all be rosy optimists. I want us to have a better season than last year. Last year we opened with a messy 1 point comeback victory over the Falcons who were coming off a 7-10 2021 season and also finished 7-10 in 2022. Today we opened with a messy 1 point comeback victory over the Titans who were coming off a 7-10 2022 season. Winning is better than losing but I didn’t want to win messy against a team that is not a good team. At least last year the messy opener was a road win. The optimists can pop their champagne. I will wait until we are on a better track than last year. Maybe in a few games we will figure out the oline problems and Carr will click better with his receivers. But that ain’t now. Right now we are no better than 2022. We played an exact repeat of our 2022 opener and I am sorry it that doesnt meet my expectations.

Same injury as Penning, Thomas, and Harty in 2022 and CGJ at the end of 2021. We either need to find players without toes or get a field without turf. I dont know how much it would cost to roll in some sod, but losing 2 of our last 3 1st round picks and our top paid receiver seems more costly.

He’s quickly becoming Davenport 2.0 (didn’t play in his opener for the Vikes).

Saints front office/scouting can’t really be surprised either. I mean he’s had injuries as far back as 9th grade football. Not a guy I would have touched in the 1st rd.

Good luck to Payton on his surgery/recovery but you can’t count on his health.

Elevate Niko Lalos from p/s. Foskey isn’t ready.

They certainly went into the draft with a view that they'd ignore injury history, constantly.

Honestly though, Granderson looks miles better than Davenport or Turner anyway.

Yeah, Granderson looks damn good.

Don't like the news about Turner, but otherwise happy with the result. Saints got the win.

It was Carr's, and a few others, first live game action with the team. Willing to give them all a chance to get used to the system.

Just read an article that said Penning is a disappointment so far, but the only we he gets better is to keep taking snaps. Agree with that. Let's hope he improves every game.
