Re: Saints @ Panthers Game Day Thread
One question with the offensive play calling that I have, where are the screen plays, so far nonexistent. Is that because of the limited backfield options? It has always been one of tool available in preventing the Defense from teeing off on your QB.
Predictable, static, conservative play calling in the first half, better in the second half they were much less predictable. Taysom behind center running and throwing even if only there 1 time. Taking handoffs/toss in the backfield all of which puts more pressure on the defenses. The guy is Beast running the ball especially when he get a head steam. Game plan him in something other than RPO that is statistically 99.9% Run so far this season. Let’s play and game plan to win 1st-4th quarter not only on offense but also on defense. Prevent defenses are a holdover philosophy from a bygone era in the NFL. If you have a good defense why take away their ability to control the out come rather than being a passive participant. 2 down 21 to go. |

The "prevent" defense didn't prevent anything. The Panthers marched 70 yards in 50 seconds, using zero timeouts and scoring a TD. |

Re: Saints @ Panthers Game Day Thread
I said last night, I think one or more of the defensive captain will have conversations with DA about statistically diminishing an outstanding performance with that kind of dated defense that seldom accomplishes it stated purpose. Last night only thing it prevented was a 20-9 win.

Carr missed a lot of open guys, but still. I do like Taysom Hill having the option to through that bubble to Shaheed on those two draw plays. Love that design. I also like Taysom Hill in the backfield as an actual running back. He’s an excellent power back. That honestly needs to be his position.

Re: Saints @ Panthers Game Day Thread
The issue with screens, if I'm not mistaken, is that it takes a great deal of coordination and execution by the offensive line to not only sell it, but to carry out their individual roles off the line. If we are still working on getting the basic pass blocking down how can we expect execution of the screen yet?
I suspect it will all be coming and wish we could get this all hammered out in the preseason, but times they have changed. |
